If you play a game at default clocks and everything works great then you increase your vram by 500-800mhz and games crash are you seriously stupid enough to not figure out what the cause was or is that a “clue” that maybe your vram was clocked too high?

FYI, memory is only heavily overclocked for ETH mining, pretty much everything else is underclocked or left at stock.

Even when mining ETH, if it crashes or throws errors, it's no different from clocking it too high when gaming, you reduce the clocks until it's stable.


Really I'm not sure why you're even in this thread, if you don't want to buy second hand mining cards, that's your choice.

You just keep spewing your opinion out as fact, and try to force it on everyone.

rofl the semantics king strikes again! I used parenthesis on game for a reason. I've already made the point that different games will crash on an OC that might normally have seemed 100% stable. That could mean the game just doesn't work well with them. Any veteran OCer has encountered this, it isn't new. You still have provided no evidence that mining with a memory OC that might be unstable in some games is damaging cards.

You can do anything you want to your card. My problem, which you'd know if you didn't come in on your high horse thinking you got it figured out without reading what came before, is when miners sell their cards and don't disclose that the cards VRAM was pushed to levels that make it unusable in games, 24/7 for however long they owned the card for. I think most buyers would want to know this. This is about the 4th time I've made mention of this. Undoubtedly a butt hurt miner will come in at the end of the thread and rehash the same thing over again because they want to maintain their dishonest selling practices under the guise of "well it's harmless so I shouldn't need to disclose"

Again, ONLY eth mining benefits from crazy memory clicking , and if gamers push their clocks passed the manufacturer specs, it’s no god damn different! Both are above what the manufacturer states as working clocks.

I’m not the one on a high horse here. You seem to have little experience with mining, but seem to have a huge chip on your shoulder in regards to it.

Also If the memory overclock is unstable , you’ll get errors while mining as well, not just gaming.

Memory chips can be specced to run at 100, 500, 6000, 60000. Different timings, voltages etc. What the card manufacturers ends up running them at, does not always equal the maximum speed that they are designed to run at . and that comment was about your "ICs failing due to electromigration", and people running the VRAM out of spec. Not to games crashing.

Additionally, when you overclock the memory, the timing changes with it.

How do you police this though? There is no way to prove whether or not anyone mined on a card prior to selling it. Does a gamer that passively mines on his card (why wouldn't you if it is profitable and you already have a sunk cost) when he isn't gaming expected to disclose? I would expect he should have to as well but I'd wager many aren't doing it. I'm a huge proponent of full disclosure but it doesn't change that people omit or even lie when they sell things. I'm also not one that sees anything wrong with buying a former mining card based off experience.

Your last sentence makes me not too concerned about your first. The fact that you can't correlate games crashing after an overclock with something running out of spec is proof positive who the clueless one is.

That's a good question, unfortunately there's no way to police this to my knowledge so I think it's important for people to be made aware of what is a very common practice on cards used for mining.

I can run some games on my bios modded and heavy ram OC'd 580 without even tweaking the settings.
Temps are fine, Memory is fine. Think of all the poor 580's in gamers computers with little ventilation in a shitty case, and heaven forbid the STOCK FAN CURVE!. I personally would never buy a gamers gpu. Rode hard and put away wet, over and over again.

Kyle, would I be out of line for assuming that it's common practice for you guys to back your clocks back down to stable settings once you hit instability?
How would we test systems that were not stable?

Lying to get something comes natural for them but they forget what you plant - you WILL harvest (even if it's 20 years later when you don't need it to happen most. As it is said, "vengeance is a dish best served cold." and no one (no one) can circumvent it ...

Viper was talking about the engineering specs, not stock clocks. Stock clocks are NOT "spec" to engineers. Usually there's a huge buffer between what something is set at vs. what it can handle. Like VRMs may be able to handle 50 amps but are only ran around 20 amps, ect.

I'd personally have no problems buying a nVidia card that's been mined on. nVidia locks down their cards very very conservatively.
 
It has slowed down huge, BTC is hovering around 8-9k and every altcoin basically pairs with BTC and their graphs look all the same. The local CL is flooded with ads for GPU going lower and lower. Not that I'm buying GPU, I'm still running a 2013 card fine but I'm looking for a different part and I see GPU parts FS.
 
Well I finally got got a vega card and i'm trying to recoup some of the cost buy selling my old 7950. Hopefully prices don't fall too quickly...I want to get at least $125.
 
Mt. Gox is apparently doing another big liquidation right now, sending BTC prices (and all other altcoin prices) back down. Because crypto is purely a speculative bubble, there is no reason to buy into it right now. Without buyers, miners can't make a profit. Without profit, there is no reason to buy additional GPUs

.. and the cycle continues in a slow, (albeit wavy and volatile) downward spiral..
