Is the Era of Gaming Console Declining?

Give me a gaming console that can support a keyboard and mouse and I'll forget I even owned a PC.

PS3? In Unreal Tournement (which also allows player made maps) and CS:GO and a few others you can play with KB/mouse plugged into the USB ports (or wireless). You can also navigate the menus and browser with them.

I can't for the life of me figure out why this community cannot understand that they make up about 1% of the gaming market. The majority of the industry to not care about mods, kb/m (I'll come back to this later), dedicated servers, elite graphics, etc etc etc...

As for keyboard and mouse, I believe this is the largest barrier to moving console and PC into one... people don't want to sit at a desk and play a game... no matter what that benefits. Don't give me that crap about some table or something to play from the couch... it doesn't work and is highly un-comfortable (believe me I have tried everything). Drop the KB/M and all of the sudden the PC becomes a console... companies can make and market "windows 8" boxes (steam box anyone?) or we can use are customer built rigs.

Just my opinion.

1%???

Hate to tell you, but for all my attempts to troll windows users this site isn't yet about Linux gaming (or even Linux and OSX gaming). I'm pretty sure that having mods available increases sales by more than 1% (even if foolish people cause Elder Scrolls to sell better on consoles). Keyboard mouse? Are you saying only 1% of gamers have ever played a FPS on a PC? Custom servers are definitely rarer than 1%, but that requires vastly more effort than just using a keyboard and mouse.

I'm curious about custom rigs. I'm pretty sure full custom is 1%, but you can get most of the PC gaming satisfaction by taking an average Dell and stuffing a middling decent GPU in it. I can only hope that COTS (commercial off the shelf) PC + barely understood GPU is higher than 1% of the gaming market.

Depending on how you factor in digital sales on a PC, the PC accounts for about 40% of sales for the major AAA title that is offered to both console and PC simultaneously ... unless we assume that 95% of PC users are actually using game controllers I think the PC gamers with Keyboards and Mice account for more than 1% of the gaming market ;)

That said, as I stated earlier, I think there is room in the gaming market for all three types of gaming - mobile, console, and PC ... they all offer distinct advantages and disadvantages and I don't see any of the three being a fad and becoming extinct ... certain types of games will always favor one platform over another and casual games will always be capable of exceeding the market share of even the most popular AAA console/PC title ... but only because their cost and difficulty is lower

But lets not fool ourselves.

I know the PC fanboys love this news but console gaming is still a much much bigger market than PC games. It would have to decline a lot to be equal to that of PC games.

Anyway, time for new consoles. The current ones are way too old. Maybe it is that people are getting sick of the same system after 7 years. I know I am.

Its a much bigger market simply because developers refuse to program and games for it. All we get are the shitty console scraps.

They are not just refusing to program for it just to give you the middle finger, how can one not comprehend this. If there was money to be made then they would do it... there are factors as to WHY they won't do it. In short the money is not worth the risk.

PC gamers want it bigger, faster, and strong... oh and it should be free too! That and keep giving us content which should also me free.

Mobile games are leveling off. Its a non profitable fad. have you noticed how slowly games come out on andriod lately? Throw away distraction just like snake on your nokia. Its just prettier now. A few are hits but most are knock off java games from 10 years ago. This is the future as i see it and it will come to pass., ohhmmmmmmmmm.
