Is the 4850 good enough?

So I bought a new Samsung T240 monitor for 215AR at NCIXUS and the resolution is a step up to 1920x1200. I have a ATi HD4850 will that be good enough for the resolutions for the majority of games say L4D, TF2, COD4? Or will I be needing a new one like the GTX 260? Would like to know before monitor comes because I would love to play at that res when I get it right away.

if you dont use 8xAA, those particular games should run fine.

i find that at 1680x1050, 4xAA, transparency multisampling, 16xAF, i dip into the 40's in some TF2 maps, and in creek in cod4

Why dont you try looking into getting the 4870 or 4870 x2... For some reason I am learning towards these babies more than the 260/280

Idk, Prbly because I am coming up short on the cash... The 4870x2 are too expensive for my blood atm. I am looking towards a $200-250 dollar card. I might get the 4870 or GTX260 depending on price. Or if I can get the faster GTX280 for about 275 ill dive for that.

And yea I kinda do want max settings and highest AA and AF settings in L4D and TF2.

Well the 4850 is only $120, so if you want a $200-250 card get a 4870 or GTX 260 - either one of those is better suited for that res. The 4870 can be had for under $200 AR (512mb) or $220-240 for the faster 1GB model. The GTX 260 is available at $200 as well.

L4D and TF2 are really easy games on video cards, so either the 4870 or GTX 260 should serve you just fine at that res with max settings.

Thanks, thats what I was afraid of, needing to get a new gfx after I get a new monitor. I'll prbly keep looking to get a 4870 just because I have a better experience with ATi on my systems.

Your best bet would be the HD 4870 1GB, you need more RAM for the high resolution.

Well if you already have the 4850 then just try it out. It'll play those games maxed, just with only 2 or 4x AA instead of 24xCFAA. Or you could pick up another 4850 for $120 and crossfire them.

4870x2 / gtx280 cards are more for e-peen / geek boy status symbols in all truth. On a
24 inch monitor I find the 4850 to be quite a powerful card. Get a 4850 and put more of an investment
towards a nice HDMI glossy / brightview monitor like the 2408h monitor and a blu ray player or something. 4850 plays
Far Cry 2 nicely at 1680x1050 2xaa on High settings. Turn shadows off. After
switching from 1680x1050 to 1920x1200...it looks the same. Definitely not worth the
extra $400 to play at 1920x1200 when the game looks just fine at 1680x1050

hows the HD4850 fare in Farcry 3?

edit: I do mean farcry 3, as in, how does the HD4850 hold up a year from now? How much e-peen as a GTX 280 worth when the GTX 380 is out and your 280 is struggling to hold up 30FPS in the newest latest and greatest title?

Umm I just got mysel a Samsing T240 I am pretty sure thats a good monitor right? I have a PS3 so got blu-ray there. Just wanted to have all the eye candy at 1920x1200. I wasnt even willing to spend 400 lol. Max for me is maybe $275 but I'd like to stay under $250. Get what You mean though. I would never consider the 4870x2 or the GTX295. The GTX280 is viable because I have seen them drop below 275AR and that card will hit 1920x1200 like a rock.

The FPS in cod4 drops from 120 to 30 on the 4850 when someone pops smoke in your face. (1680x1050)

Well I've been running a Gigabyte HD4850 since it came out, and quite Frankly although it has its Quirks, it has done a Remarkable Job, besting my MSI T2D8800 Ultra OC Box, and my Asus EN9800GT UL Box. I've been gaming on the ATI Machine for a while at 1920 x 1200 and have Enjoyed the Experience it delivers.
Sure I wish I had gotten a Faster Card, but for what it does, it's a Great Card.

Alright I hear you. GTX280 275 AR? Haven't seen that price anywhere. If you need all
the eye candy then GTX260 or 4870 1GB at your price range. If you can find a GTX280 for $275 then go for that, but again, $275 is the price for a 260 right now. Or you can get
a 4850 now for $102 and wait for the next gens to come out this month, because
prices are going to drop considerably on the gtx260, 4870, 4870x2, and gtx280
once the new cards come out this month.

Well, give it a try and see what you think. You might have to drop to 2x or no AA in some of the latest games at that res.

I got my 4870 a few weeks ago because my new display runs at 1920x1200, you can pick up a decent 4870 with a much better cooler for under $200 now.

2x4830 wouldn't be a bad choice either. Not amazing but it wouldn't be bad.

Actually I do think he means Farcary 3. Farcry, Crysis a.k.a (Farcry 2) and Farcry 2 technically (farcry 3).

wow and nobody catches on?

how futureproof is the card? How long will it last? how will it perform in Half life 3 and Farcry 3 and etc etc.

4850 realistically will last a year. If your talking all the eye candy then guess what, the gtx280 and
4870x2 can't run crysis / crysis warhead with all the candy at 1920x1200, so you'll never be happy with any card if you need all the eye candy. That's why to me, the
4850 just makes a lot of sense.

All the latest games look great on this card, like cod5, crysis
warhead, far cry 2, etc. as long as the rest of your system is up to par. But with the latest games your going to have to tweak the settings by turning down the resolution a bit and running 2xaa, etc. If you
toggle between overrall settings in games, your going to notice that going from Very High to High settings your not really sacrificing much at all. If you tweak the settings your
going to have a good gaming experience as the guy with a $500 card. It's more about
the game than the hardware in the end.
