Is the 290X the only worthy upgrade from a GTX 580 3GB card

Currently I have the MSI GTX 580 3GB Lightning card. I have a 1440P screen. I can only see the 290X or non X or a 780 being the only cards worth it for an upgrade, but I am not sure even these will really provide that big a jump. Should I try and wait one more generation of cards?

Rest of my rig is a 2500K @4.2GHZ 16GB ram and 128GB Samsung 830 SSD.

To greatly oversimplify 580 = 670 = 760. Would you upgrade from a 760 to a 780?

I wouldn't unless your 580 is really struggling. Maxwell will be a much more noticeable upgrade. Me and my 670 are very content to wait.

Until the official reviews come out, there's really no way we can tell at this point. I must say though, GTX-580 3GB's were amazing cards, and are still very doable today. Good purchase decision.

GTX 780 is roughly 50% faster then a GTX 580. Its your call whether that is a worthwhile upgrade or not.

Nvidia is planning on making some sort of announcement next week, prices could come down and make a 780 even more appealing

The 580 is roughly equivalent to a 7870 according to AnandTech's benchmark. You could see some pretty large increases in performance just by grabbing a 770/7970GE/R9-280X.

Getting a 780, or possibly R9-290(X) when that comes out, will offer a massive performance boost. At 1440p, a 780 can almost double your performance.

Shit, if I was in your position, I know what I'd do.

The new games coming out later this fall are going to be pretty demanding I doubt you'll be able to run them at max settings with 60fps, might even be tough to hold 30. I would definitely consider the 780 or 290x. Wait till the latter comes out first though

2560 X 1600

GTX 580 - 68
R9 280X - 97
MSI R9 280X(1050 mhz) - 100

GTX 580 has roughly 200 mhz of max OC headroom just like the R9 280X(1050 mhz). R9 280X is about 45 - 50% faster card. R9 290 is going to be roughly 20% faster than R9 280X(1050 Mhz). that would put it at 1.75x the perf of GTX 580. faster than GTX 580 SLI which on avg is around 1.6x. 45% for R9 280X and 75% for R9 290. how much more do you want in an upgrade :D

You have some very good points..OP, the 580 Lightning was a flagship card, and I am sure you can get a decent price for it on Ebay..If you can get $200~250 for the 580, then it makes it much easier to face the upgrade cost of the 780 and the hopeful prices of the 290/X..I think @ 1440P, a pair of 7950s would be a very viable option..You can grab a pair new for ~$360-400 depending on the rebates, along with 6 games...That is a TON of raw power for 1440P, especially when you consider their insane O/C'ing headroom..

$200 for a used GTX 580 is a tough sell when new HD 7950 cards are selling for $200 -220 with 3 free games. a fair price would be $140 - $150. throw in another 160 bucks for a ASUS R9 280X DCII TOP and the OP could call it a day. if he wants more than he will have to wait for R9 290 on Oct 15th and check out its pricing. that Hawaii GPU is a true beast and with a bit of overclocking could easily be 2x the perf of the GTX 580 lightning. :D

You wont find a 580 for $140-$150 they have stayed overpriced because alot of people are still looking for a 2nd one to sli and will pay a premium to do so,

Also, wait to see if nVidia drops their prices some after 290X hits the streets. That'll make an upgrade more economical.

I pretty much have the same setup as you OP. 2500K + GTX 580 3GB @ 2560x1600. I'm planning to make the jump as soon as the specs are revealed on Tuesday. I think the GTX 780 was already 2x faster than the GTX 580 at higher resolutions so it's the perfect time to upgrade imo.

Exactly my point. And you will notice that I said eBay, not tech forums as well..The 580s are still one of the best workstation cards due to the crippled compute performance on the 6XX/7XX series (below the 780)..Add in the fact that this is a 3GB card, not the much more common cheaper 1.5GB cards, and it is indeed a FLAGSHIP card (that matters to a lot of people)..He can get $200+ for it.

I have similar specs and 3GB Evga 580s at 1600p and I'm definitely feeling the pinch in the BF4 beta. All my console port games play flawlessly but that fucker is going to prompt an upgrade.

My ability to pierce the veil of time and space is currently limited, as such I cannot provide information as to the viability of a yet to be released or benched card.

Thanks for the advice. Its gonna go up on ebay. I have to try and get by with a spare card, just not sure any of my spare cards can use a Dual Link DVI cable to support such high resolutions.

I have 580 SLI @1440p, I can run High on BF4 BETA with no bling and mostly 65 FPS (which is what I want for MP games). However there are lots of drops and it is the BETA. I am going to wait until BF4 is released AND a couple of driver updates before I worry about upgrading. High is good enough for me, esp MP.

I hope I can skip til the next gen, unless Mantle is the be-all for BF4. Then I might just join Team Red.

I don't have the PSU to run 2 580 in SLI. I think a 780, 280x or 290x is in my future.
