Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z
2500k
2 x 4GB RAM G.SKILL ECO 8GB (2 x 4GB) Model F3-12800CL8D-8GBECO (low profile, low voltage)
Corsair H60 water
HIS Radeon HD 6670 (does not need power cable from power supply)
Silverstone 500w PS
not installed in a case

Problem:
When I power on, system seems to start (fans spin) for 1 second, then system powers down.
- no beeps
- no error code on motherboard LCD

"Known Good - components that worked in another system
Power supply
Video Card

Steps taken
Clear CMOS
Remove components
disconnect all cables to drives, keyboard, mouse, NIC
checked that both power supply cables inserted fully
tried with no memory installed
tried with videocard removed
made sure Corsair H60 3-pin cables connected to motherboard headers

Am I missing something stupid? (wouldn't be the first time)

I don't have another board to test the CPU or memory on.
I don't have another CPU that will fit, or another set of DDR3 memory.
I am somewhat mystified at the lack of beeps or error code - shouldn't I get something with memory and videocard not installed?

Any thought/suggestions gratefully accepted.

if you aren't getting an error code or beeps with the memory taken out then i'd say the boards toast. outside of that i'd make sure its not shorting out on anything since its not in a case.

ouch!
First thing I would do is very carefully look at ziff socket for bent pins with like a 3" round 5X magnifying glass
Next thing I would do is try with stock Intel cooler
So, you cant even get into bios?
Did you reset cmos with battery out and PSU unplugged for 30 min?

when my psu died it did this
powers up for a brief moment then just shuts down without a word of warning

Correct - I cannot enter BIOS
I reset the CMOS using the "Clear CMOS" button that is a feature of this mobo.
I'm going to try another PS tomorrow before I look at ziff socket.

I am going to try another PS tomorrow.
Thanks for letting me know you experienced this symptom, and what your solution was.

well, that little feature aint good enough, but if you are satisfied, then so am I.

I'd be curious to know why you would not trust the "Clear CMOS" button.
Seems to me it is simply a shortcut to shorting 2 pins......

Because the button is a momentary short - half second
Its worthless for serious CMOS clearing in "no boot" situations (like yours)
Because modern PC are never off - trickle voltage
According to a jonnyguru review one PSU was even still pumping voltage with rocker switch on "0"
Because the cmos battery holds the charge for BIOS settings retention, and the bios chip has a partial backup

In other words, I personally am not happy with a cmos "button", I want everything off and dead for at least 30 min. Bad or malfunctioning HW can corrupt the bios, and I would just prefer the best shot at a fix.
