Is it wise to wait for DP 1.3/HDMI 2.0 monitors?

I've been wanting to upgrade to a new monitor for a few months now. I'm pretty much ready to jump on the LG 29UM58 ultrawide as the price is right, I won't be able to use the higher 29um68's freesync cos I use Nvidia cards and the 34" versions at 1080p seem like a bad, blurry choice.

That said, it comes with two HDMI 1.4 ports, and with the advent of UHD and HDR content in the next year, I'm wondering if it makes any sense to buy a monitor now that doesn't support DP1.3 or HDMI 2.0 like Polaris/Pascal will support? I don't want to be locked out of future conectors and it seems that by this xmas more monitors should start shipping with the modern interfaces since the GPUs will already support it.

Thoughts? Should I wait for updated models later in the year?

Hmmm... so, should I interpret from the lack of answers that people don't really think or care about the ports issue? In which I'd have my answer and I'd simply pull the trigger on that LG 29UM58.

You're in the same boat a lot of us are: We want to upgrade but do we keep chasing the rainbow...because there is always something better around the corner...or make a move now.

I've seen a lot of debating about how much benefit those items will offer in the short term.

I'd put it to you like this. That's a nice montor for $300. You're not breaking the bank. The worse case scenario I could possibly see for you is you buy it... love the hell out of it... and by year's end you either 1.) Don't care or 2.) if you're blown away by something new you can sell this and buy that without being down much.

In other words: $300 gets you really nice stopgap in a worse case scenario.

I'm going to put that LG monitor somewhere on my own list. I'm actually pretty amazed to see a 29 inch IPS ultra wide monitor at $300 or less depending on where you shop even though I know that's "only" 1080p. I have to say that's a hell of a value I see there, all told.

You make a very good point. The LG is indeed a great option, the only thing it seems to lack in comparison to the $70 more expensive 29UM68 model is FreeSync, which is useless for those who use nVidia anyway. I'm currently using a 1080p 40" Samsung LN40A550 TV from 2008 and while it works perfectly, there's much better panels out there at this point, so I want to retire this TV to a family room. I'm not sold on 4K because I ain't buying anything more than a Pascal GTX 1070 (or whatever they call the x70 range this year), so I won't be able to move that many pixels anyway. Ultrawide would be great for Word, as much of the time I'm comparing student essay drafts with final versions side to side and 16:9 never gives me enough width.

Thanks for the advice, bud.

I'm doing a lot of fence sitting, back and forthing, information overload so... I hope that's worth something. :)

Ask yourself this - in what way will the connectors limit my usage of the monitor for how I intend to use it. With HDMI 1.4 you're fine for this display (21:9 1080p @ 75hz). If it were me though, I'd pay extra for the FreeSync version. It has the extra DP 1.2 connection for more flexibility going forward, and FreeSync is a nice perk. Don't rule out going AMD in the future. Additionally, it's not impossible for NV to throw in the towel and add VESA adaptive sync support down the road.

You can always wait. Or you can buy and start having fun now.

Rumour has it there will be a paper launch of the Pascal cards next week, but it is a rumour.

Me, I've got SLI Titan Xs so I'm sitting out this round of cards.

Good points brought up all around, and it's our eternal debate: buy now or wait. I think it's wise to at least wait to see the new cards from AMD/nVidia and then decide. If AMD tells me that we're getting HDR monitors this fall, then I'll wait. If those are still a couple years away... then I'm going ultrawide by end of this month. In the end, it's only $280 and that extra wide space will be useful when grading essays anyway.

HDMI 2.0a aka HDR "monitors" are out there right now, in the higher end TV sets, 40" and up. GPUs, not sure if the 9xx series can be updated (and maybe only 950/960) but they are technically only 2.0 at the moment. Regardless the HDMI 2.0 spec is limited to 24/30hz in 10bit modes, so really only for HDR media. (cartel port is gimped, go figure)
If 8bit is "good enough" for you (which is really almost all normal PC uses) some models make mighty fine 60hz 4k displays.

If you want >60hz @ 4k and/or HDR at more than 30hz and/or stuff like freesync etc, wait for DP 1.3 GPUs and "PC" monitors, the former hopefully really soon. The latter, who the hell knows. Sometimes I really hate this tech crap, feels like its artificially held back lately.

The 29UM67P is available on Newegg for $279 and I am tempted.

Trying to find info from people who have this and are running it on Nvidia cards at 75hz. Not a lot out there though.

There's this and then the 68 which is a newer version?....

I'd wait for this HDR horseshit to sort itself out.

Windows has no official support for HDR yet. And even when they do applications will have to add support. So it will be a piecemeal experience outside video content for the next couple years.

Microsoft Bringing Native HDR Display Support In Windows This Year - MSPoweruser

Add to that the totally incompatible multiple fucking standards for HDR content, and it's going to be as fucking mess. Just let the industry sort this shit out fr a couple years before you care enough to dive in.

Lucky for you, the DP 1.3 will by that time be widely available, so 120 Hz 4k displays already be a reality :D

No, probably the "business" version. Their naming scheme is odd.

No, the 29UM67 is the 2015 model with freesync. 29UM68 is the 2016 model with freesync.
Then, 29UM57 is the 2016 model without freesync. 29UM58 is the 2016 model without freesync.

It's quite straightforward. Sometimes they're followed by a -P, but not always. That said:

You are absolutely right in that respect. I always jump in a bit too soon. The 29UM58 can last me for a couple years comfortably (heck, I'm still using a 7 year old 40" 1080p LCD TV as my monitor) and once HDR standards have been formalized and unified, then I'll jump in. I just with we could skip this BS part and get straight to where we all get HDR already. The technology is there and it's possible at all TV/monitor sizes right now, yet I'm sure a) it'll trickle in to the most expensive models first just to make people with too much money pay for it and b) manufacturers will keep the standard wars for a while because they are all obsessed with control. Ah jeez...

Here is a thought.
When/if the monoprice 34" curved monitor comes out it would be the same deal, 75hz.
For $499 that would be worth it over this at $300.
Only problem is that monoprice is being wormy about the 34" release date and who knows how good it will be.

Shopping for a monitor sucks.
.....unless you get the x34 or the pg348q..,.

Pretty much anytime you spend $1500 you get a good monitor :)
I'm trying to spend %20 of that :D

Hi,

I created an account just to reply to this since im on the exact same boat as you.

In my country, only the 29um58 is available and I want that Freesync so bad.lol

If you head over to AMD's freesync site, Freesync has been enabled for HDMI.
They have a pdf but I cant provide a link since this is my first post.

If you check the Monitors tab on the same site, they have a list of all the Freesync enabled monitors including the LG 29um58.

I'm still having doubts though since I haven't seen any reviews for the 29um58 yet.

It's going to be at least 2 years before a semi affordable video card can actually run contemporary games at 4k at 120hz, so keep that in mind.
