You say they aren't selling or distributing it but wouldn't installing it on someone else's computer (yours in this case) be distribution?

As for the legality, I have no idea.

No... Geeksquad charges you to remove stuff and install Antispyware or Antiviruses (free versions).\

They are just charging you for a service, they aren't charging you for the product. You can install it yourself.

Of course not. People have a right to charge money for their services. AVG has some whacky default options, I can see why someone would need an expert to sort through the crap that's needed and the stuff that's paranoid mode to save users from themselves (active surf shield, etc.)

Exactly as said.... they CANNOT charge you "legally" for the product, but can charge you for labour.

AVG-free can't be used in a business environment, that would be the only illegal thing if thats what is happening

I wouldn't point to GeekSquad as the best example for what's "legal", no matter the case.

BestBuy gets caught breaking laws all the time when it comes to retail sales, just browse The Consumerist. :D

People pay me to do work on their computers which involves installing free software sometimes. I'm not afraid of being arrested because they know the software is free and they are simply paying me for the labor.

Speaking of charging money for AVG installation - I found out that a persistent 100% CPU usage of a single core in firefox (25% spread over 4 cores) was being caused by AVG Safeguard (version 9.0). I had to disable all my plugins / add-ons one at a time until I found the culprit. This is even when I freshly open a browser staring at the blank default page I have. Sad.
I just wasted half an hour of my life, I wish AVG would pay me for that.

Avira FTW ...

no legal to charge to install, but is illegal to charge them for the software..

you can charge anything you want for your services..

If a computer shop used AVG as their primary product for a free AV for home computers, I'd question anything else they do, and how competent they are. AVG, for the past quite a few years, has performed very poorly, there are far superior products out there for a free AV product for home users. Avast is better, AntiVir and MSE both even better yet.

AVG used to be god because it had a small foot print and used very little resources, then more and more people started using it and it got more and more bloated.

I would question a shop pushing AVG-Free as they obviously don't keep abreast of the A/V world and detection rates ect.
