In the early days of USB-C, there were a few reports about buying a cheap chinese knock-off USB C cable that could damage your components. Even a branded Oppo wasn't that good either. Is it still a problem today?

+1 on Anker. I buy all their chargers/cables now. Not too expensive and the work really well.

you can also get adapters that aren't bad. i bought a pack of 6 off amazon for my new phone. they're called arktek. that way i can just stick these on every micro USB cable i have lying around.

yup what he said^^ make sure you get a high wattage
Does a high wattage cable also guarantee 5Gbps transfer speed? I've seen many that can supply 5A charging but the advertised speed is still the old USB 2.0 480Mbps. So now we have high ampere but low data speed?

As long as it's plain USB (3.1) you're working with it's pretty easy nowadays.

But the moment you get into Thunderbolt or >60W power delivery then it gets difficult again.
