I game some, but not a huge amount recently.

Once in a while, StarCraft 2, Serious Sam 3 slow a bit and it's annoying .

I didn't want to spend much. maybe $170 or so.

I have a Core2Duo at 3.4 ghz on a Gigabyte MB

After even more reading, it's looking like the Amd 7770 might be a better choice.

Are the AMD/ATI drivers up to snuff still? I see mixed reports. I've had a few problems.

I love bait threads!

I haven't had any show-stopping issues with drivers from either company. I've been using Radeons in my primary computer for the past 3 years and no big problems. I have 2 geforce cards in the house and they haven't given me any problems either.

it's more of a side grade than upgrade

a HD 7770, HD 6850, HD 6870, and GTX 560 will be some good choices

Cards at that level like resolutions like 1600x900 or lower. So if that is where you are at that is good bang for the buck.
