Iran is implementing a plan to isolate its citizens from Western influence by instituting its very own Internet. Iran’s telecommunications chief claims in two years, all ties with the Global Internet will be cut and all homes and businesses will be connected by the government run Internet. The switch will include a new operating system and a national search engine.

Iran will roll out a parallel network with the current one and then make a full and final switch to its own Internet.

I for one am for this.

Since there are no gay people in Iran, sifting through porn would be a breeze.

2 years? Just cut them off today, they'll build their "internet" so much faster that way!

Wouldn't this be an "intranet"? .. but good - let them build their own "parallel internet", there's no pr0n to search in Iran anyway! They might run their internet on IPv7.

News like this is a real eye opener and shows the lengths at which a tyrannical government will go to suppress and control it's people. Since I've lived in the US all my life I've become complacent with the fact that this country offers us so much freedom. I guess it takes a story like this to wake people up and have them appreciate the lives they have here.

So.... new OS and national search engine for good measure on top of making your own intranet for the country?

Next story fast forward 2 years from now when they flip the switch.

"Huge civilian refugee problem as all Iranian Civilians flee the country to get internet connection to p0rn having nothing to do with camels or goats! Oddly Imanutjob doesn't see what the issue is..." :p

They're affraid of what's happening in the rest of the middle east. They've got to protect their people from the evils of free speech and human rights.

Show me a government that hasn't passed a "we can't allow this type of speech into our country", and I'll show you a government that doesn't want something like this.

As far as I can tell, very few politicians have the slightest clue that different countries have different laws, and that banning thoughtcrimes in their own jurisdiction doesn't allow others outside the jurisdiction to support the banned concepts.

Wow, even China isn't that bad. They just filter everything, not block access outright.

I feel for bad for those Iranian citizens. Looks like they're taking a page out of Kim Jong Il's book.

Besides US there's Europe, Canada, Japan, and Australia that have freedom. Countries that are free only make up 1/7th of the world. Those countries fought for their freedom long ago. They could always pull a Egypt of their own.

So far I've only seen one post appreciating what the people that created this country did.
Yet every time Steve or Al post anything that's related to restrictions by the U.S. Government you see that 70-90 percent of the posts are from people whining of how terrible that is.
Goes to show no one cares until someone steps on their own toes. Then again, once that happens all they do is whine.
Freedom is an interesting thing. It swivels between the lack of it and the complacency of it. When you don't have to pay the price for freedom and you take it for granted you simply don't care. The most interesting part is that once you start becoming complacent with it things are set in motion to start losing it. This is just my own observation on how people interact with freedom in general and how it affects Peoples throughout generations, in a period of time that's longer than a lifetime.

Can't wait for an injected worm that will disrupt the whole Iranet :D

This is my initial thinking. It makes it soooooo much more tempting to send them more destructive viruses and worms if you know it can't leave the country :p Wouldn't shock me if it happened the first day.

Iran: "We have now fully released and segregated our intranet!"
Man in army attire runs on stage and whispers something
Iran: "It appears the evil zionists have infected our intranet and caused every processor and video card on every connected computer to OC and melt, causing widespread fires and server damage. If you are seeing this at home, unplug now. Apparently the virus was called Candleja......"

Maybe this will fire the Iranian people up even more to fight for their freedom. It's the only way to earn it. I just hope when it happens, we're on the right side and supportive.

Also all those free countries freedoms are on a downward slope. Patriotism and all that.

Probably easier for them to create their own than censor the entire internet :D

Iran fought for its freedom in 1979 ... freedom from a western puppet government.

Well, I'll bet it won't take long to bridge the close Iran network to the open Internet.

I'll bet that's done on day one.
