Got a new Acer on hand and it comes with a moderately nice 60hz IPS display.

It's a nice display but I'm spoiled on my 165hz TN panel on my desktop rig. It's also apparently very very easy to swap the display on this model - the bezel just snaps out and the display is four screws and a ribbon connector. The replacement 120hz TN can be had for about $100.

The 1050ti will likely not be able to drive many titles to the max on the new display, but if I drop some quality options and wind up in the 80-100fps range I'll be happy for $100.

If you were in my shoes, what would you do?

I went ahead and purchased the upgrade.

Desktop doesn't look as nice, but games running at 100+ FPS are buttery. Very happy with the very easy upgrade.

If I s truly a gaming laptop, you'll be happier at the end if the day with the higher refresh rate. Unless you happen to spend a lot of time looking at both next to each other...

    I game on 60hz... I'm to broke to upgrade to a new 120hz.. eventually.. i'll upgrade to a 144hz 1440p.

Personally tho, if your on battery, I wouldn't go to a 120hz but if you dont care to much go for it. My Alienware 15R3 has a 60hz Gsync and i'm ok with it.

I think the fact that you took the time to research if you could swap it and how to do it answers the question. The 120hz display has value to you otherwise you wouldn't have even bothered looking it up. Swap it out.

I just got a 144hz IPS on my laptop ... it's only 1080p but still better than 60hz - it's out there if you just look around.

For a strictly gaming laptop I think the faster panel is the better choice. However, even if the laptop is used for office type work just 10 or 20% of the time, I'd sorely miss the IPS display.
