Some guy that was buried under the rubble of a collapsed building in Haiti stayed alive 65 hours with the help of his camera and an iPhone. Laugh at all those stupid iPhone apps now! Thanks to Mike Mallahan for the heads up.

U.S. filmmaker Dan Woolley was shooting a documentary about the impact of poverty in Haiti when the earthquake struck. He could have died, but he ultimately survived with the help of an iPhone first-aid app that taught him to treat his wounds.

Glad to hear that this person is alive. I guess an Windows Mobile phone would have bored him to death.

Better yet, get the basic first aid training that everyone should have and then trade that iPhone in for a shovel.

Seriously, start the breathing, stop the bleeding, treat for shock.

It's easy, now 65 hours I'd probably be bored out of my mind and glad I had something to play with.

I thought it was going to say something like he gave his GPS cords away with a txt.

Still cool, if they wrote the article about me though it probably would of said something like:

"iphone found with man buried under rubble indicates he spent the last minutes of his life streaming porn before suffocating."

Wow I just got earthquaked. Figures I make a joke about getting buried alive and as soon as I hit post the room starts moving. I've got my iphone with me at least.

P.S. not joking, I live in Chile we've had about 8 I've felt in the last 3 days =)

I call BS on the story. There is no way the iPhone battery lasted that long :p

As cool as this is, any phone could have done this, but we all know Apple zealots will be ALLLLL over this. Im extremely happy they found the guy, technology saves the day :D

Well, the iPhones GPS receiver isn't the best, and I kind of doubt he could get a GPS signal in the rubble. Hell, I think he was lucky if he had a cell signal at all.

Depends how buried he was, could of been a sheet of plywood with a couple rocks on it.
They got him out so I'm assuming he wasn't that deep.

I'm glad he survived, but relying on an iPhone for first aid skills is pathetic. Basic first aid is an important skill that everyone should have, regardless of smartphone availability.

who the fuck carrys a shovel everywhere they go? lol

Shovel, towel, emergency blanket, lighter, knife, compass, water purification tablets, a couple granola bars, first aid kit, flashlight, topographical map... and that's just to go to work.

What do you keep in your pockets? You should see what I keep in my truck.

OK, ok... it's not really a shovel, it's an entrenching tool... But still...

heard about this yesterday. I remember saying to the wife how lucky he was to be in a profession (filming the poor) where the hardware helped him stay alive....or at least navigate in the dark.

As for the iphone helping him, I think that's great. It's one of those things you're glad u paid a buck for. I'm sure there was no signal post earthquake too so calling someone is silly (to those funny people).

On a similar note, I heard there were family members who are holding on to some hope that their loved ones are still alive BECAUSE they received text one to two days after the quake. I'm thinking, and correct me if I'm wrong, these are belated messages arriving as soon as signals reconnected. Is this a safe assumption? I'd love to be wrong and they really are alive.

If he had a 3GS and stuff like Push off, then, yeah, it could've.

when I want to extend power, I go to EDGE and lower brightness. I get tons of extra life. Not gonna test 65 hours though.

He could have turned it off when he didnt need to contact someone
Or Airplane Mode. You switch the thing to Airplane Mode and lock it and that sucker'll last for days on end.

The iPhone doesn't even have a full-fledged GPS receiver. It uses cell tower trickery which requires at least a couple bars to function.

Werd, I even have a grappling hook. You never know haha

Not entirely true. 3G and 3GS have GPS. Only 1st gen has no GPS and uses cell and wifi triangulation to determine your position.

If I've gone without recharging my phone for 4 days before, that guy can go without recharging his for 65 hours.

If he had any other phone with internet this would be a non story. It's not like this app has all the secrets that no one knows about. He could of just googled it and got his answers, but because it was an Iphone App that makes it news worthy. Good on ya news reporters for making Apple seem like a Jesus.

Oh and if you just turn on airplane mode it's pretty much a Ipod Touch which does not get 60 hours of use. Either he just used it for the informational aid or he had a power cord under there.

This smells fishy!

65hrs? Ok, maybe he turned the Phone off?
No, would be stupid, eh?
So he did not call anyone? Nononono, he played MacGyver and survived, all because of apps?

I would accept 25hrs, but not 65!

I thought this was going to be a story about starting a fire with the phone when the battery gets hot.

Too bad he didn't have an app to tell him not to go to fucking Haiti.

I'm assuming he took a nap while he was under there, I would. He probably shut it off for his two or three or more naps. Let's say he had it on for 45 hours, mine lasts that long. I always forget to charge it and it goes days.

I still hate the iphone and I hate apple more though.

I forgot to say, he's a film maker, if he didn't get some "Blair witch, I'm trapped under rubble going to die footage" I'm going to be pissed. That would of been a much better usage for the phone.

It's a pretty short article. He used the iPhone to illuminate the area to find shelter, and then to run a first aid app to treat his wounds. Then he set the alarm to go off every 20 minutes.

in the interview he said he set it this way because the app told him going to sleep with a head injury is a bad thing. It is true advice but if all i had was the luxury of a nap, I'm taken it---app or no app.

Not what I was responding to: There's a lot of speculation on this thread about how much use he was making of the device. The article answers that pretty clearly.

All we need is for someone with an iPhone to light it up for 15 min or so, run the first aid app for another 15 min and then put it in standby after setting the alarm to go off every 20 min. See how long the charge lasts.
