I'm thinking about getting a 3g for a friend in Europe but need to know is it possible for them to be unlocked? He doesn't us At &t and I don't know if he can get it so if it cannot be unlocked it may be a worthless gift. Thanks in advance for all help.

Wire him the money to pick one up on his local carrier? It'd be cheaper than going AT+T And cancellation fees.

But to answer your question, yes, it can be unlocked. iphone dev team is the appropriate google search.

The problem with unlocking though is that every time Apple releases an update, you have to wait for a new patch and play the unlock game again, right?

Pretty much :( Apple is the king of queers when it comes to being power user friendly. I don't give a shit about what you want apple, If I want to abuse the Tilt sensor I will! Fuck your SDK!

Yea, if the iPhone were made by anyone else, it would be different, as in, more open to being useful. And hence, I would buy one.

Just upgraded to a 3G from a Blackberry. I'm every impressed with it's form factor and abilities. It's not for everyone. It's not the "perfect" business phone. Yes there are better phones out there, but what it's intended for (multimedia device) it's great. Some people just don't get it, and they never will.

Can you unlock an iPhone? Yes as many have stated. O2 is the carrier in the UK. S(he) can activate it with them without the need to unlock the phone. If they use a different provider. Use this.
