iPhone 16 and 16 Pro

LOL iOS still can't simply install a different ringtone if easy as you can on Android?
People still use ringtones?

edit: I mean i agree it is stupidly harder compared to just drag and drop which is silly. But i may have heard my phone audibly ring only a few times in the last 5 years lol.

How else are you going to hear an incoming call or text message? Do you keep yours on silent/ vibrate all the time?
Honestly its on vibrate all day at work and usually i just forget to turn it off that when I get home. Back when I used to change ringtones based on my mood or favorite song of the week this was annoying. On android I had tons of options, apple yea i have a few i bought a decade ago but beyond that most i do is whatever's built in for those moments i do have it on loud.

too bad Apple doesn't sell older versions of the Pro models when the new ones are released...I guess they realize a lot of people would buy an older Pro/Max version when the new one is released...Apple sells older models of the base and Plus models

Apple might not because they dont want to lose money. But carriers still have them and they mark them down.

but those are locked...if you buy from Apple directly it's unlocked
Yes, but if you are getting a new phone you will need a service - unless the goal is to export. So pay for the phone and after some cool off period, you request an unlock.

For example - this is Tmobile.
https://www.t-mobile.com/responsibility/consumer-info/policies/sim-unlock-policy

I think verizon is 90 days.

Then there is this:
https://www.androidpolice.com/t-mobile-could-cut-installment-plans-new-60-day-unlock-rule/

Which sucks for carriers that offer you a sweet price that they require 24 payments on, but if this passes after 60 days you pay it off in full, unlock your phone and bounce.

I have a question about magsafe. Are the magnets in the phone or is their metal in the phone for magnets in the connector to attract too?

No; admittedly it's not exactly the most important missing feature (classic phone calls? What's that?), but it is a bit frustrating that you have to go through a couple of hoops to add a custom ringtone.

magnets are in the phone for sure i am not 100% certain if they are in the chargers as well or not. Id have to look the magsafe spec up but i just checked for magnets in my iphone. Probably have to be because it centers its position, that would require another field present.

Been using my iPhone 16 Pro for a day, and… if you’ve been using a 15 Pro it won’t be a shock, but for someone coming from a 13 Pro, I’m thrilled.

The biggest thing is the display improvement. I’m catching up on some features, like the always-on display, but the larger screen and thinner bezels really do go a ways to making it a nicer experience. It feels like a larger phone than it really is.

And while I tried iOS 18 before, the combo of that with the new hardware is great. You can create the layout you have on Android if that’s really your thing. And you can absolutely go to town on Control Center to get the settings you want there.

Cameras will need a fuller test, but I’m mainly looking forward to sharper macros thanks to the 48MP ultrawide.

Yep. Thats my thing. I remember it being really restrictive to re-arrange icons.

I have been using it the weekend coming from my Samsung S24U and I have very few complaints. I got the Pro because I simply got tired of having a giant phone after 9 months. I miss being able to keep my phone in my pockets while driving instead of having to take everything out.

The big things I noticed:
  • Great size and light weight. Build seems great too but its so light its hard to tell what you are paying for exactly. I wouldn't say its built any worse than the Samsung though. One small difference is the screens. With the iPhone the screen seems closer to the surface vs the Samsung. I don't know if that's because they use thinner glass or something else.
  • Face Unlock is impressively fast (though admittedly its the first time I have used it on any device since the Lumia) and I am surprised at how many apps or functions are checking to grant access.
  • Screen has really nice color reproduction.
    • But it has a lower max brightness than the galaxy; will need to compare in direct sunlight.
  • Stacking notifications. I remember when they just gave you a million individual ones. Too bad you cant individually clear them or interact with them from the lock screen. Don't worry Apple, I have faith in you, you're almost there.
  • Happy it allows you to use Chrome password manager to Auto Fill right along side its native password manager.
    • Too bad you cant import passwords from another password manager into 'Passwords' without a Mac. Not that I would, but its an interesting limitation.
  • Google apps all (except Assistant and Pay - both understandable) work including background sync of Google Photos
    • Some of my other apps do not work in the background and I can live with that. The photos are a bigger deal.
  • Without a doubt and I expected this, some apps look nicer on iOS. Not all, but to a varying degree between a lot nicer and identical. The bigger the company the smaller the difference between the apps.
  • I am still not satisfied with the way it handles 'back' actions. For example. On android, I can open a picture in discord or facebook and flick from either edge to go 'back' and it will close the image. iOS requires me to hit an X in the corner. In some apps, and I really should write out the steps, there is no apparent 'back'. Unless I am dumb and cant figure out how to swipe right consistently.
  • I appreciate iOS asking me to "not to track" after every install.
  • Besides that, it seems like it has nearly all the same features found in Android one way or another, granted I am not as much of a power user anymore but there's nothing important I am missing at the moment.
  • Still find it interesting how it doesnt have an 'app drawer' it has an app page and on that page it categorizes the apps on its own and doesnt let you re-arrange them.
    • So it does baffling things like put "Windows" (the new RD Client) into its own category called "Productivity and Finance". Meanwhile, it has separate folders for both of those categories. But it doesn't pick productivity or even utilities even though it has other similar apps.
I don't understand how everyone can have their own take on mail in 2024. iOS Mail, Gmail and Outlook all do the same thing all three look and feel different. iOS mail being the most janky, in my opinion. I cant figure out which I like more Google Maps or Apple Maps but ill probably end up using Google just because its familiar. Photos is another story, Apple photos seems to be a bit better through out. Yeah, so overall, unsurprisingly, I am very happy.

Now I just need to figure out how to get my ring tones on it. ;)

The screen seeming close could be the panel itself, but I also wonder if it isn't the thin bezels on the iPhone. Not that the S24U is thick, just that Apple might have one-upped Samsung on this front.

I found the iPhone good in bright sunlight in what time I've had. Samsung will have an edge simply because of its anti-glare screen.

You can unstack notifications by tapping on the group associated with a given app, and then clear them individually.

I find the back functionality a bit of give and take. It's nice to swipe back no matter what on Android, but it's also nice to know that you won't inadvertently undo something because you tapped too close to the edge.

You can get an alphabetical list of apps by swiping down from the App Library. Me, I tend to just search for the app or, if I use it often enough, in the recommended apps from the search-anywhere field.

I like Apple's Mail client for personal stuff because I don't have to wade through ads or four separate tabs just to clear everything. That and I like marking people as VIPs so I know I'll always be notified when I get messages from them. And I've found myself leaning toward Apple Maps because it's been easier to read directions... and, I'll be honest, it's just prettier.

I need to compare them side by side.

Yeah, I know, but... come on.

Google does that too and I disabled the "Priority" mail box nonsense where it auto categorizes mail.

On a much lighter note: My friends that have had iphone's for years act like I came over from the dark side. My buddy nearly creamed himself when I messaged him and he saw a blue bubble. They act like I had a vendetta against apple or something. I only had a vendetta against a gimped operating system that took 5 years to adopt copy/paste after its biggest competitor.

4 hours screen on and 1 hour screen idle between two days is impressive. I put it on the charger at 10 percent.

why would they ship the iPhone 16 without any of the hyped Apple Intelligence features?...if it wasn't ready then why not just wait until the iPhone 17?

Because it likely was meant for ios17 and the iPhone 15 pro but they missed that by a mile, and they don’t want to keep people waiting any longer.

Besides, the big selling point of iPhone 17 is going to be the complete redesign rumored of the hardware versus being a software heavy year. Without the AI features the iPhone 16 is a very marginal update.

Although I will say - I’ve compared my 15 pro to a 16 pro and the battery life and heat improvements are pretty massive. Enough that I’m debating switching even though on paper there are very little differences between the two.

Apple decided to make its move soon after ChatGPT exploded in late 2022. My guess is that it was just too short an interval to have a polished release in sync with iOS 18. Better this than a Rabbit R1 situation where the functionality is simply broken.

Updating to beta to get intelligence seems nice. I don't have to carefully sculpt my requests to siri anymore. Picture magic eraser is decent. I know neither of these are ground breaking by any stretch. But coming from 13 pro to 16 pro i do feel the screen is a lot sharper with a smoother brightness curve, i tend to use it on low at night and my 13 had giant brightness steps where this has smaller ones. Phone seems much colder to the touch during use, except with the camera, it seems to heat up a bit with that. Photos come out nice overall I am happy. Probably not worth $1k out of pocket moving from 13pro but for a couple hundred i am content.

edit: oh yea, the onboard sound is actually impressive. I mean it has at least caught up to what I liked most about my HTC inspire phone i had back in the day lol.

I cant decide if I should swap my black phone for a white one. I got a clear case on it and I think I know exactly what's gonna happen, this thing is gonna be full of pocket dust. Stupid complaint, so bare with me.

Dustiness and fingerprints are why I always get the white phone.

I think it’s a very boring update on the pro side if you already have a 15 pro. One of the smallest incremental updates in years. Worthy update if you’re on an older model though. The AI features when released are huge given the way Apple is implementing them, and iOS 18 is already one of the best iOS updates in years.

I’m really hoping the 17 is a ground up redesign and we can finally get away from the garbage design since the 12. I want a phone like my 15 pro but with the form factor of the X to 11 era. The 15 redesign improved things slightly, but I still hate the squared off design. My midnight green 11 pro is my all time favorite design from a hand comfort and aesthetic perspective.
15 Pro is better for photography. The 3x optical zoom is closest to "what eye sees". It's stupid that they seem to concentrate on everything except the "right" zoom level lol. 1x, 0.5x and then skip right to 5x.

Yes and no. 5X does force you to step back for some close-ups and portraits, but it also means you can capture photos that simply aren't possible with 3X. I can see 5X being very appealing at concerts.

Stupid apple and their stupid nice headphones making me feel good about spending money. Assholes.

Depends on what you take pictures of ultimately. However, the 16 Pro is better on the average as a 3x lens ain't doing what the 5x lens can do, and the 0.5x camera is higher resolution now.

I already love the ultrawide for the macro quality. You can spot the finer grains of pollen on a flower, and it looks superb unless you zoom in so close that it’s borderline absurd. And yes, other phones can do this, but the color reproduction and overall performance is better than I’ve sometimes seen.

I’m sure I’ll have some envy when the iPhone 17 Pro rolls around and has a 48MP telephoto camera, but I was due for an upgrade and don’t regret it.

Been trying to use Siri and it's shocking how dumb it is compared to google. My guess is whatever apple has up it's sleeve has to be better or else its going to be a joke.

Better question. Why doesn't the native apple keyboard have a number row or a way to get to numbers easily? Ipads have it.

I've been on the beta of iOS 18 and Siri is astronomically better. Siri will be using AI from this point forward. Siri has been utterly useless garbage up until this point.

What does this even mean? Google assistant vs Gemini is nearly indistinguishable except for needing to give Gemini even more access. The fact that Siri isnt up to par with Google or Alexa is just weird.

I think it's almost up to par. It's also going to be a lot more tightly integrated into the OS with more updates and being able to do actually useful tasks the same way Google Assistant can. I think it will be on par or better than Google Assistant by the time iOS 18 is completely flushed out in a year. It's off to an extremely good start.

I just traded out my Pixel 7pro for a 16pro max and I’m happy with the new device. Yeah there are some tweaks that are taking me a sec to get used to, but over all it’s been a solid device. I’m still using several of the google apps like pictures and mail, and like other folks have said the integration is really good.

I think my only gripe so far learning different gestures to handle things like closing out of a picture or full screen movie etc. That’s just a learning thing I’m sure I’ll get over.

You literally just push the 123 button. Becomes second nature and it easier than long pressing keys, faster for me for sure.

I still recommend slowly moving off of Google. Mostly for privacy reasons, but the big thing is that once the iOS AI features roll out the more you're using that is part of iCloud the better the Apple AI will be, and I really like how the Apple AI runs as much as it can on the device itself before reaching out to the cloud.

Impressive!

Apple needs to get rid of the Camera Control button on the iPhone 17
I’m impartial on it. It replaced the 5g antenna window, so it’s whatever. At least it means you’ve got another button to open the camera and the action button can be something more useful like flashlight.

you can get the Flashlight from the Lock screen which is fine...the Camera already has 3- 4 different ways to access it which are all fine...the Camera Control button is overkill...plus it really only seems useful in Landscape Mode
