All the mockups I have seen online with the 3 cameras are FUGLY. With a capital F.

Everything I've read suggested that next year's iPhone is "supposed to be" a big leap forward with features like full-screen Touch ID. Forbes has written a lot about it over the last couple of months.

The reveal is the 10th, not the release. It'll likely follow Apple's pattern of a Tuesday reveal, pre-orders opening Friday, and then released the following Friday. Meaning it'll release on the 20th.

So far it looks like this year's iPhones will primarily focus on the camera with the rumors of a third lens (wide angle) and AI low-light photography (like Google's Night Sight). Unless there is something more groundbreaking they've been keeping under wraps then I'm skipping this generation and holding onto my X for a third year. Especially since the new phones will be using Intel's modem again which are always sub-par in my experience. Next year's iPhone will be the one to get most likely - supposedly going to be using QC's modems again too thankfully.

I'm sure it will be a solid bump up. It's all incremental at this point as we know. But if you have the upgrade fever you have it. And if you don't, you don't.
Three cameras will be great. Faster processor, well and good. Lots of subsystem tweaks I'm sure. Possibly support for more bands. Some Chinese models will have dual SIM (I still seriously hope they come here as well).

Waiting another year won't be a big deal for someone like me to do. 2020 will have some other/more significant stuff like support for 5g (which may still not matter even in a year). Hidden FaceID cameras. OLED on all models.

I'm not sure Apple actually expects many iPhone X owners to jump on this year's iPhone. Some will because of two-year contracts/instalments, but I suspect Apple is really putting its money on the 2020 iPhone.

As it stands, I scratch my head at the folks who still upgrade phones every year and aren't on a plan that encourages it. That worked several years ago, when each iteration was a massive leap in performance and features, but it's usually very iterative now.

The thing I am most looking forward to is finding a good deal on a used or older model for my wife to upgrade her Iphone 6s Plus. I am hoping for a good price on the current gen XR... I don't see a reason to pay out for the newest model.

I like my XS. Coming from a 6S is was a huge upgrade.

Two things really bother me about it. I would probably upgrade if either of these were changed:

    * The sleep button on the side, being opposite of the Volume Up button, and pressing that combo results in a screen shot. I take a lot of accidental screen shots just trying to put my phone away
    * The camera bump. Idc about the notch at all, but the camera bump, the phone won't lay flat on a table, and with the oleophobic coating, it slides off level surfaces

A few things are annoying... if they fixed a lot of these I would consider upgrading:

    * Software isn't nearly as stable as it has been in the past. This is a software issue primarily though
    * FaceID may be a bit too lenient. There's been a lot of tiimes it's been in my pocket and unlocked somehow
    * The Intel modem is noticeably lower signal strength than the 6S had with a Qualcomm modem

The lack of headphone jack, the battery life, the lack of a physical On/TouchID button - none of that bothers me in the least. The general overall performance of the phone is really nice, and the OLED screen is ... very nice. The fact that it's about the same size as my 6SD was, but has the screen area of the much larger Plus model is really very nice. Not sure it's worth the premium over the XR - that phone looks good too, but I don't regret having bought it.

Same design 3 years in a row, Ugh. And iOS still blows. Was hoping iOS 13 wouldn't still feel like something from 2010.

I am just so used to stock Android phones, like Nexus, OnePlus, and Pixel, it's so hard for me to switch. But I will give Apple lots of credit for designed beauteous phones, and superb hardware. But man that triple camera setup in the back is godawful.

If iOS just had like the top 10 Jailbreak tweaks baked into stock, it would make a big difference for me.

It's funny, when I'm at Best Buy, I'll play with the display phone iPhone XS Max, and for the minute or so I use it, I love it, seems so smooth and fluid. And I love the style of the phone and feel in hand. But then after couple minutes iOS settles in, and just frustrates me how it works, and I am reminded why I prefer stock Android .

Surprised that no one mentioned them possibly going to USB-C, which doesn't look like the case from leaks so far, I think. Which is unfortunate even as an Android-only person, just so there would be that many more USB-C cable available on the market and absolutely everyone will be using the same charger for everything and we can all share cables/chargers. It would be cable bliss.. but alas Apple seems to be delaying the inevitable for another year at least despite already converting the newer iPad Pros over to USB-C.

Everything points to the 2020 iPhone's as being the next big design change and new features.

--Punch hole camera design like Note 10 display.
    -5G
-Possibly Always on Display type feature

Honestly the phone could literally be a Tim Cook poop and I’d likely buy one because iOS imo is the most secure platform that also has the apps that I need and the integration for all I use. iMessage is amazing. Mail and iCloud and syncing and — it’s just so cohesive and the company ethos regarding privacy is fundamental to my loyalty. It’s something google could never achieve given their MO is to harvest every detail possible and sell it to advertisers.

Without expressing why I prefer Android phones over Apple I had to extract how you described Google's MO regarding privacy. I am laughing hysterically, what you wrote is so true :p

I hope it has an onscreen fingerprint scanner. I HATE my iPhone XS Max, coming from an iPhone 7+. Sure the phone is faster and the screen is nicer, but man I need a fingerprint scanner. I would probably sell my XS Max and buy a new one if it had a scanner on it.

2010??? Even Windows 95 is more advanced simply by having a start menu!

    But what gigatexal said...

Keep in mind that Windows Phone actually felt like a step back from iOS in some respects when it was new! It had a Start menu of sorts, but there wasn't a whole lot to lure iOS or Android users.

I mean both Apple and Google are heavily involved in China to my knowledge, but it seems Google has been doing a lot more shady stuff trying to comply with Cina's laws or helping to get around them. Maybe those are just the stories I hear, but Apple seems less shady in that area - but not positive. But the reality is every single company that uses data most likely sells it to advertisers or 3rd parties, with or without your consent.

it's all about the apps. When Google killed Microsoft 3rd party YouTube app even though Microsoft complied with every request and rule, that was the death blow to WP. Developers aren't going to make apps for a platform with few users. Users are not going to get a phone with few apps and especially not when you can't even YouTube and Facebook.

I do a lot of mobile gaming and need color accurate screens for my photography and the iPhone has been dominating at both lately so I don’t really have a choice. Fortunately I like iPhones, but I do hate Siri with the burning rage of a thousand dying stars. They really need to switch to USB C already.

I actually prefer Siri over other assistants in some ways, for one main reason: smart home control actually works properly.

My favorite example is changing the color of a Hue light. Ask Siri to turn it white (you know, like natural sunlight) and you get white. Ask Alexa or Google Assistant to turn the light white and you get... yellow. Then there's Google interpreting "turn my lights off" as applying only to whichever room it thinks you're closest to, Alexa having trouble recognizing rooms properly, and I start to think Apple ought to win simply because it's the one that actually does what you ask from your smart home gear.

I have Amazon Echo, Google/Nest Home, and used to have the Apple HomePod. I'm in the process of switching out most of the Echos for Google/Nest Home. You're totally right about the Alexa having issues recognizing rooms. Google doesn't though; and I'm pretty accustomed to saying "all lights off" to turn off all the lights instead of just the room lights.

Only reason I'm keeping Alexa around is Audible and Apple Music.

HomePod is nearly useless as it cannot do very much as it isn't supported by many companies (at least when I still had it). Last I check it still doesn't even work with Logitech Harmony. Primary reason I got rid of the HomePod was my Wireless Roku Speakers for my TCL Roku at . At one point I thought about getting an Apple TV and perhaps another HomePod for stereo audio. But this Roku ecosystem is pretty awesome. And I can't wait for it to have airplay.

Yeah, my beef is mainly that Google used to interpret "turn my lights off" as applying to the whole home, not just the room you're in. I shouldn't have to specify "all" or use a routine like "good night!"

HomePod would work well for someone like me, whose smart setup mainly involves lights. But I do agree that Apple needs to expand HomeKit support. It's getting there, but not yet.

I'm not sure what to think this time. There are really no rumors other than a new camera system. All the cool stuff either got axed or is "coming in the 2020 iphone".

In screen finger print scanner? - Rumored for 2020
Notchless screen? - Rumored for 2020
    Reverse wireless charging? - Canceled
    90+hz screen - Rumored for 2020
Move from lightning cable to usb type c - Rumored for 2020
    Apple pencil functionality - Canceled

I really don't get what's going to be new this time around. I'm hoping that Apple is just able to keep their secrets under wraps, but anyone who keeps up with new iphones know that generally about 9/10 rumors are right by the time the phone releases. Right now it looks like just a new camera and new cpu.

If the new iphone doesn't look good, I guess there's always the Oneplus 7 plus and $400 in my pocket.

Not much of an iPhone fan, but wow, these new Pro phones will supposedly have insane great battery life. 4+ hours longer than the XS, and 5 hours longer than the XS Max respectively, and finally a fast charger included in the box.

To me battery life has always been one of the most important factors in a smartphone. Because a phone with no battery % left, is just a brick then.

Kicker is, it still runs iOS, yuck :( I'd be way more impressed if they finally revised iOS, than the phone itself.

Apple actually dropped the price of the iPhone 11 compared to the XR ($699 vs $749). I don’t recall the last time Apple dropped the price of anything.

My kids are looking at the $150 price drop on the XR to upgrade from iPhone 6 or 7's. $599 on the 64gb or $649 on the 128gb

I really don't want Apple to do that. Improve the system, but do more than simply follow someone else.

Too often the feature requests seem to devolve to "do what Android does. In fact, just make an iPhone running Android. Kill variety and competition." We should ask Apple to find its own path, not just clone Google's ideas. Otherwise we end up with a homogenous phone market, and that's bad for both innovation and customers who want real choice.

I'm actually pretty impressed. I didn't think I would be but they gave me just enough to be interested.

    The good.
    • Better Screen - More pixels, high nits, HDR10
    • Better Sound - Early hands on say it sounds really good. I've been impressed with the sound on my XS Max and they say this should be better. I listen to music in the shower so not having a bluetooth speaker needed is nice. Better than the already nice XS Max speaker is icing on the cake.
    • Better Battery - My XS Max lasts all day and then some. When I travel I like having extra battery life so that 4-5 hours more will be nice, even if it translates to an hour or two of usage.
    • Better Camera - The X to XS Max wasn't that huge of a leap. This generation feels like a much bigger leap.
    • Fast charging - I shouldn't be excited about this. OnePlus is already on like the 3rd generation of fast charging. Android has had this for years and years and years.

    The not good.
    • I still wish it had reverse wireless charging since I have the wireless charging airpods and it would be nice just to plop them on my phone at night.
    • I wish it had no notch. Not a deal breaker since I dont know how I feel about pop up cameras. I don't like mechanical moving parts on my phone.
    • Biggest letdown and I knew it wasn't coming yet is the under the screen fingerprint sensor. I don't mind face id, but if I had the choice, i'd go with finger print any day.
    • Not USB C on both ends.

    Questions for reviews.
    • Is the transfer speed of files faster? Does it leverage that USB C connection or is it bottlenecked by the lightning port.
    • Is the cellular modem better than the intel XS?
    • How well does Wifi 6 work? Is it worth an upgrade to my wireless AP's at home.
    • With IOS 13, can I drag and drop movies directly from my computer to my phones files. They mentioned something very similar in the iPad reveal where he watches video taken from a drone from a usb stick. If I could finally just drop movies on the phone and watch them (mkv, avi, etc) that would be amazing.

I will admit the hardware in the new iPhone 11 pro Max is amazing looks like the battery life will be off the charts great the display is super good The stereo speakers great.

But man that operating system just sucks balls. Wish you can get oxygen OS on there
