I am looking for a simple app which will allow my boss (who has no clue how to use his phone) to read word/excel/pdf when he does not have a data connection or so he can save files from an email for later review.
I have Evernote, but just the free version and not sure how well the Pro version works with offline mode. Also, many times I open a word document in Evernote it screws up the formatting and tables.

Tried GoodReader? it works reasonably well for files that aren't too complex in terms of graphical objects. The dropbox viewer is free and it does about the same.

Another option is CloudOn....it hooks into your dropbox account and give you full editing ability for Word, Excel and Powerpoint, right on your ipad. Of course, you don't have to edit anything it..just scroll through and read it. I think that is actually the best way right now. I've not used this from email, though. Hang on...I'll test it and get back to you.

Yeah, it works. you just use the mail app, then open the attachment...then use the "open in" option. Scroll down the list so that CloudOn is shown...then select it...file opens in editable form...and preserves all the formatting (at least as far as I can see). CloudOn is using the web versions of MS Office. Not sure if this service will be free forever, but it is right now.

Will look at GoodReader.
I use Dropbox myself for personal items, but much of what he wants saved on his phone will be contracts or legal documents for business which I know he will hesitate to allow onto a cloud service.

Ah yes...I see your point there.

Yeah, plus not the easiest person to please when it comes to mobile phone usage, he thinks his phone should do exactly what he wants no matter what. And of course he wants an iPhone which we all know is not always open to everything.
GoodReader looks like a good app which can just transfer/view locally on the device which he will like, now to get the company to pay me so I can 'test' it on my iPhone first. :p

Well, if it's for work use, it might be worth getting Pages, Numbers and Keynote from apple. They're easy to use and fairly powerful. He'll be able to read, create and edit PowerPoint, Excel and Word documents that are stored on his phone/ipad, via email attachment and even icloud. The only real downside is that they're more costly than most office apps ($10.00 each).

If he's going to be using it for business though, it's probably worth it.

I did forget about those, since the last person who told me about them said they were not worth the money ($10 each). I know MS said they are 'developing' office for iOS, but no ETA last I read.

Tested GoodReader and he liked it so that is the winner.
Thanks for all the help, now why could Apple just not give us a file viewer. :p

You can drag and drop files in/out of goodreader inside itunes app file sharing.
