Into GPU's, but not so much gaming?

Anyone else feel this way or am I just weird. I enjoy keeping up with current tech. Talking myself out of purchases in the FS section/stocking up on HW i don't really need. etc. etc.

But don't really have a ton of interest in gaming these days. I will fire up a game now and then, but I last about ten minutes and move on.

Yup. Same here. I have bought 5 graphics cards off frgmstr here in the past 2 weeks.

Oh man, I was kicking myself having a shot at some of those and not jumping. But my marriage is better off because of it. Wanted to get a chance to play with some Vega action.

    Wait...five cards lol, wow, jealous.

For me hardware got less fun when you stopped needing it to play games. I can't remember the last time I actually needed a PC upgrade.

It's sad that gaming has advanced so little that a 7 YO 2600k \ GTX 680 Build could still play anything at 1080p pretty darn well.

If you tried the same thing in 2006 when core 2 duo launched you wouldn't even be able to install modern games on your 1999 Pentium III with a geforce 256

It's hard to get excited for ryzen2 this, navi that, when it doesn't matter. I would love an excuse to upgrade my build, but it plays everything fine even at 1440p.

    Seriously.

I have found I enjoy buying old hardware off craigslist and putting it together for friends, family, and I've done a few charity builds for the kids of some single moms. Hardware is usually haswell era i5/i7 and hd7870 or gtx780 stuff, but everything plays really well at 1080p.

Yeah I agree upgrades aren't as huge as they once were. I still enjoy keeping up. But recently downgrading from a 1080ti to a 1060 I realized how good of an experience one can have with less hardware. Its easy to get caught up reading a site like this in the mind set that one "needs" a 2080ti.

You guys need to load up on Nitric Oxide like beet root powder and buy a smaller monitor =) Lots of games out there just suck just have to find the right ones which is why I hang out on this site to weed out the games that just want your money but offer next to nothing in replayablity or good design. Right now I'm on a RPG binge trying to stay away from buying first person shooters. That is really hard to do since there are a ton of them and alot of them are actually pretty decent. There is nothing saying you have to use your GPU for gaming though you can just run benchmarks and just don't do any gaming and be perfectly happy with your purchase.

Thats basically what this thread is about, I still totally enjoy hardware even when I am not gaming all that time. But what the heck is the deal with beet root powder? lol

I just found by eating it gave me more desire to do stuff like play games and lower my blood pressure.

Hardware used to be a lot more fun when IQ and performance were advancing at a rapid pace. Now outside of benchmarks it’s hard to get excited about new GPUs. Not to mention the joke that CPUs are today.

I upgrade every 3-4 years now just so I can feel the same rush that I used to get once a year back in the hey day of 3D.

My last truly exciting purchase was a VRR monitor. That actually made a real difference to my gaming experience.

I feel the same way in general. I'm getting older (in my forties) and though I like the feeling of getting new hardware I am very choosy about what games I play anymore. I don't just buy something because it's on sale. I actually enjoy the building part of PC gaming rather than putting a lot of time into the actual gaming.

I have fun with my 1080 Ti on my desktop rig... and I have fun with the IGP on the 8550U in my ultrabook.

Yup. Now I want it on everything. Moving to a 120Hz+ panel helped too, even on the desktop- I want both everywhere!

bahahhaa. I am the same way. I honestly haven't played much but I love the excitement around shit. But its really the only thing I spend money on and I sell and re purchase new one.

Mostly GPUs, CPUs I usually wait on. I was with intel for the longest time. But switched to AMD recently with ryzen 1600 cuz it was cheap to hold me over until zen 2 which I will be getting.

Yep in my mid 30s now. Don't really care about gaming too much but I love enjoying playing with parts still. I was all in to custom water cooling before but to lazy for that now. I do like to upgrade CPU and GPU often. I think I have been through every GPU other than titans.

Yeah I agree. I'm at i3-8350k clicked at 4.7ghz and 1080Ti and I'm like "meh" at all the new tech.
And games? Waaaaaay less since I ditched MMORPGs.

Unsurprisingly, I feel the same about phones.
Before I would upgrade once a year. But now I've had a Note 8 for nearly 2 years and think it's pointless to upgrade.
Sure I love new tech and that's the only reason why I sometimes think about upgrading, but it's not really that exciting anymore. Not even close.

Yeah, I spend so much money on PC hardware and I don't even know why.

I mean, I like playing the latest and greatest games, but honestly I've been playing more indie titles recently, 2D games, etc. and those would run fine on Intel integrated. They are still fun.

And I have like 10 computers or something stupid. I spend more time just fixing them and updating drivers, Windows updates, etc. than I do actually playing any games.

I'll probably keep my main two rigs (in my sig) and maybe the Intel NUC (since it is cute) but I'll just sell the others. It's too much hassle.

I owned 3 1080 Ti's before I sold them and bought another one just for fun and benchmarking, I didn't really game on it a lot back when it was released. Use to buy the top of the range hardware because it was interesting and entertaining to see how well it performed.

But now I own a mid range PC because I couldn't be bothered purchasing expensive high end PC parts and made very little use of it's power. From 2009 I've owned top end Intel and AMD CPU's, GPU's from both NVIDIA and AMD and so on, about last year I stopped buying high end parts because I thought it was a waste of money, like I mentioned I don't really game anymore and I don't do heavy tasking so it was pointless.

I now have a GT 1030 in my current PC as I couldn't be bothered with gaming anymore, don't have time for it anyway and I got bored of it.

Games today are of a lesser qulity than 10 years ago...loot boxes, regenerative health, shooters on rails, lack-luster gameplay....the hardware is getting better, but the muppets running the publishers are getting way, way worse...and thus games (due to developers being pushed into making crap) suffer from it.

I agree (I think myself getting older is a big part as well) but it is hard to find a game that is halfway decent anymore. Or it is gimped somehow, like good MP but no single player.

Yeah...I think I am spoiled as I strated gaming on the Amiga (Civ, Dune 2, Gunship 2000 etc.) and then swapped to the PC when Doom launched, running Quake for the first time, remebering how good a game Unreal was...and how my 3DFx Voodoo made the game look sooo pretty.
    New games...meh.
Only game I crossing my fingers for are Cyberpunk 2077...I loved The Witcher 3....but alas...those kind of games are far apart these days.

If you really want a challenge...get X-wing for GoG...spin it up...and tell me how difficult you find it...game in the old days were a LOT harder than today ;)

Definitely feeling this way. I don't play many games anymore. For me mining is the new gaming. I can buy even more hardware and it actually pays for itself. Overclocking/tweaking also increases income which is nice since these days you don't really need to do much to get performance out of a system.

We’re not going to have experiences like that again until the holodeck is a thing. Maybe VR will impress one day soon but it’s failed hard so many times already.

These days, I have interest in GPU's and buying games, playing them OTOH is another story. It's not that I don't enjoy them any more or have the desire to play them, I just don't have as much time as I used to. Between work and being in a relationship, and picking up other hobbies, my free time is more limited than it used to be, and that free time is also divided up between hobbies more than it used to be. I'm often times repairing, upgrading or maintaining my off-road/desert toys or out riding them.
