A tax on e-mail? Is there nothing the government won't tax? That's a rhetorical question, we all know the answer to that. :(

The idea of taxing email is no more popular today than when President Bill Clinton signed the Internet Tax Freedom Act into law. But a dedicated congressional minority now wants to allow states and localities to tax email—unless these governments are given new powers to collect sales taxes on e-commerce.

And how will they know how many emails I send/receive?
What if (hypothetically) my email server is in Texas that doesn’t charge an email tax, and I live in California that does?
What if I’m visiting another country and send/receive some emails, am I still taxed?

This is complete nonsense, and would be impossible to enforce without even more invasion of people’s privacy.

How about they just tax spam & the people who send it? That I could go along with.

I never vote for anyone who is for increasing taxes and I really like those who try to eliminate them.

Why do we waste time on these stupid laws >> Wow.. The level of stupidity continues to amaze me...

That's it.
I'm done. Going to hang it up and be a farmer.
Run everything off natural gas from my own gas well.

Live totally under the radar. Good luck when they tax the air you breathe........

While I agree completely, what will occur most likely, will be an additional tax on our internet service, targeted specifically for email.

I would guess one would see the IP getting taxed for "offering and supplying" email service and those taxes would be passed down to us.

Face it, it's just a ploy to get at retail sales taxes that are currently not available.

It's just so maddening. Our government(s) are just so large and cumbersome, they consume every dollar they can find. Even if we all payed 100% of our salaries in tax to the govennment, it would still find a way to spend all that and more.
At no one's benefit excepting the government employees or "elected officials".

If we fired these people there would be less need for more tax money because we wouldn't have to pay them anymore.

I second this. We really shouldn't be paying these clowns anything, they should be in government because they want to make it a better country. It should be a volunteer position.

Just watch this thread evolve, the way people get so worked over the suggestion that email might be taxed is amazing.

Isnt 99.99% of email spam, but due to our kick ass filters we dont see it? Still id love to see newegg get charged a penny for the 3-4 emails per day of "sales".

"If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it."

LOL.. tax email

good luck with that.

I was half expecting this to be from microsoft

;>)

The article reads like a rehash of the old Bill 602P hoax that that was floating around starting in 1999 or thereabouts.

This is crazy.

1. The Government has zero to do with email, ZERO! Even with faxes you could point to use of the telephone system which was standardized by the government and blah blah - but still that would make zero sense.
2. My company receives an order of a magnitude more spam each day than actual legitimate email. What does that do for my bill?
4. This is like taxing me based off the income I'd make from myself if I paid someone else to do my own chores - but I still do them myself! I have to pay for the interconnect and infrastructure, maintenance and upgrades. Taxes will be weaved throughout all of that.

Number 3 is missing because how we got here is illogical so it doesn't deserve proper order.

Oh yeah, the good ole 'tax on email' mail threads I used to get back in the heyday. Good times. Something tells me the corporations who run the government wouldn't take kindly to more money being removed from their already thick pockets. This idea is DOA.

What do you think the ultimate goal of carbon taxes are? CO2 is a byproduct of breathing, so it's only a matter of time.

Taxing air is simple. They just figure out how much air you breath each day, and tax you for that based on an average. Maybe athletes get taxed more for working out.

Yep. Never mind the fact that most of the C02 comes from the ocean, naturally.
Na, what people is dooming the planet. Regardless of how many tons of toxins volcanoes spew out a year, naturally. Regardless of all the forest fires burning hundreds of acres and spewing smoke into the air. Fires started by lightning. Naturally.

I keep jokingly say I'm going to "live under the radar" but actually I know people that do this and live better than I do. The average working person today (in the US) pay about 60% of their income in taxes in various forms.

I disagree completely with your first paragraph. We ARE destroying the planet, not the ocean, volcanoes and fires lol.

If what you're saying in the second paragraph is true, you have no idea how good you have it, man. But I doubt this is correct, no matter how low your taxes are. I think ultimately the government takes probably 90% of one's income. Excluding the much larger grey economy, that is.

That is EXACTLY my point. If the #1 greenhouse gas is C02, and it is 100% natural (not caused by man but generated naturally) then how are we the CAUSE of this?

The majority C02 in our atmosphere comes from the OCEAN from decomp of organic material. A NATURAL process.
But in addition to that, volcanoes spew TONS of that plus toxic sulfuric gasses into the atmosphere naturally. Naturally caused forest fires spew tons of green house gasses also.
So the small percentage that is man made is upsetting the balance and dooming us?
Utter BULL SH*T.
I don't how many cool-aid drinkers you line up to disagree.

Lol, really, it's getting to the point where you just have to facepalm anything our government thinks about doing.

Well, I never said anything about greenhouse gases lol

I only said we - humans - are destroying the planet. I'd happily see our race extinct. We're no good.

but but but the tax money will be served for a good purpose, like making internet available to everyone! A good program will come out of it, right?

HMM,
Well you must agree with this:

And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

The apostle Paul is saying at the people are naturally bad, and left to their own devices, down right evil.

What say ye?

I believe that every politician should be required to get a computer science degree. We have people who probably think of computers as boxes with fire in them, that magically make porn.

Email is just one of MANY ways people can communicate. It is by far not the only method we can choose to send messages to other people. It is just the gold standard. If I want, I can do it through facebook, twitter, skype, skydrive, and etc.

Don't think people are necessarily born bad, it's more of a cultural sickness.

You know you invite suggestions of suicide with this stupid shit.

Challenge accepted. Make them sound cool, though.

Not fire, smoke.
They are filled with little black/grey boxes called chips that run on smoke, and if the smoke comes out of the chips, they stop working.

Oh brother, and how would they know if I setup my own email farm on a different server? Ha Ha wow are they stupid!

And let me guess...all dot.GOV emails get a free pass...cause the government isn't in business to tax itself, right?

Maybe I could get behind this tax as long as all politicians are required to pay out of their own pockets the tax for all the campaign emails they send out each cycle. :p

Apparently you're unfamiliar with the complex mathematical theory of "addition". You see when you take 1 thing, and then add another thing to it, you end up with more of that same thing. Take for instance when you vomit your anti-climate truther nonsense in this forum, and then some other idiot joins you. Now we have 2 idiots puking ignorance all over the site. Thats twice as much as before, and twice as much stench. Eventually it becomes overwhelming and we cant breath from the sheer stupidity of what is coming out of your mouths.

I can start a camp fire near the ocean and breathe in tolerable levels of CO2. But if I start a forest fire I'll choke to death. Volcanoes and butterfly farts are sustainable by the ecosystem. Our sudden introduction of trillions of tons of EXTRA co2 is not. Get it? Didnt think so.

I predict the day they start charging for email is the day everyone switches to a new electronic mail format that doesn't have a charge. Nothing separates email from any other TCP/IP traffic. We just all chose to use a specific outdated protocol forever and we can switch very easily to something else. It will just be annoying during the transition.

the US is getting crazier every year. I'm scared to see where we will be in 10 years.
