I agree it's the way things are, unfortunately. I was shocked to see who is close to Intel these days just by seeing who had such quick access to the entire platform. I knew that Der8aur was an Intel shill back when he wrote this long thesis here about why Intel doesn't solder CPUs: http://overclocking.guide/the-truth-about-cpu-soldering/. I bet his face dropped when Intel started soldering their latest CPUs again. Then there is Digital Jesus, aka GamersNexus, and I guess I shouldn't be shocked. He's been pushing the overclocking of this CPU in at least two videos now. Intel must think that people can throw money away, like $6000 to $7000 on the motherboard, CPU, memory, and cooling alone. No thanks, for $2000 I can buy a 2990wx CPU with a basic X399 motherboard that will run it, and 128GB of Corsair Dominator is $1100 ~ $1200, and a decent AIO will be less than $200. And it will do everything I ever need it to do, and it will be more future proof and more upgradeable than Intel's $7000 space heater platform.

I like how they concluded the video: if someone else will buy it for you, then go for the W-3175X, otherwise buy a Threadripper CPU, any Threadripper CPU, lmao. They had to say something nice about it, but no matter how much Intel has them by the balls, they don't want to look like complete sellouts.

It will probably do okay, depending on what you want to do with it.

That being said, I feel that Intel is about to have another Netburst moment...

GN seemed pretty reasonable to me. "Don't get it unless you are earning money with it...and then, still consider your usecase. Because this thing is really expensive and there are other cpus which deliver equal or better performance for less"

Mostly with games... I know server can use all those cores and takes most Win10 drivers. I am going to have to test some stuff :)

The target audience for the overcloking videos are wealthy enthusiasts who overclock and benchmark as a hobby, with the ultimate goal on climbing on those benchmark scoreboards as high as possible. That's pretty much their only use case. I didn't really think that people like that exist, but they do. They make car enthusiasts who own two daily drivers (a turbo and a V6 - his and hers) that also have a third Challenger 392 HEMI actually look like reasonable people with sensible taste. There is no bigger waste than buying overpriced hardware for the sole purpose of enlarging your E-Peen and climbing the stats...

Yep, it's fast, but you probably won't be able to get one. From the Anandtech review, the rumor is that Intel is only making about 1500 of these processors. There are only two manufacturers of motherboards, an one of them said they were only making 500 boards. This product at release seems to be little more than a stunt, much like its introduction at Computex last year.

Actually I think it's a bit more like this:
Intel binned the shit out of the Xeon Platinum 8176 to make these and while they're making a nice profit on the W-3175X, the margins aren't even close to what they make on the server version. It's a product meant to sorta save face... because 2990WX. I wonder what Intel would have done in 2017 if AMD released a 32 core Threadripper back then...

Ok so I'm not alone. The only reason this could ever be justified is if you're spending someone else's money to get it.

This is a win for Intel. Bragging rights are good for marketing, and it's fun to see this beast out walking the earth.

But even if you're an Intel fanboy, you still need to say, "Thank you," to AMD. If AMD hadn't stepped up and given us Zen, ThreadRipper and EPYC, Intel wouldn't have introduced this processor. Or a 4-core i3 processor with an unlocked clock, for that matter.

    Competition isn't good, it's fantastic.

In this video I would have liked to see what this thing was boosting to out of box. Since it was consuming way over 250w rated TDP at 3.1ghz. But 2990wx has a hard cap at 250w. So a fair comparison would have been clock for clock despite windows shitty scheduler. 2990WX basically doesn't go above 3.1ghz when all cores are loaded and full TDP is engaged. They even said that in the video. So its a fact 2990wx is running at base and this CPU is running above spec given the stock usage. They should have checked what clocks intel cpu was running during the benches and bench the AMD CPU with same clock. Sort of rigged benches it seems. They made it seem like this doesn't matter.

Its funny AMD says TDP is 250w and it over boosts and does 350w out of box they get murdered for it. When intel does it. OMG bragging rights, powerful. AMD should start fudging the numbers too since intel seems to be doing that shit not with their 9000 series and now this. OH our TDP is base clock only but we are going to make sure it uses 100w more without you knowing about it. Shady as fuck, but only intel can get a pass on it.

Apple needs to put one of these W-3175X CPUs in a 27-inch iMac Pro, then send one to each influencer like MKBHD, Jonathan Morrison and ... I don't know who else gets free shit from Apple on YouTube ... to praise the shit out of it. Uhm, that would be the ultimate $35,000 fire hazard on your desk!

Now that AMD matches Intel in IPC, the only party trick Intel has left is slightly higher clocks at the expense of power consumption. That 250W power cap can be removed on the 2990WX, slap a decent water cooler on it, put it on an ASUS X399 ZENITH EXTREME ALPHA motherboard, enable PBO2, and let it RIP! I bet that the benches would have looked different if the comparison was fair. Oh, and Intel got to Digital Jesus, no doubt about that! Especially after he plaid the "investigative journalist" during the Principled Technologies fiasco. Never mind that they also have these guys by the balls. I mean, there are only so many tech companies, so when it comes down to it, what can you really do?

Yea fucked up reviews. Knowing this thing is overpowered out of the box makes it biased from start. They should be running the AMD chip similar wattage or make sure this thing runs at same base speed as AMD chip. That would be apples to apples comparison. 2990wx can run at 4ghz all core, so I am sure it can match the Intel chip at 350w no problem. I would have liked to see 4ghz vs 4ghz.

Did Gamersnexus just say that shit was running at 70Dba? What the fuck is going on here. I feel like doing everything to show the chip in good. 672w power at 4.5ghz and 2990wx using 190w stock in one of their tests. Hahah shit is insane. Can't even buy the motherboard for it.

As a system builder and enthusiast I consider performance, heat, power consumption and cost to be a combination of compromises. Way to go Toms....

As stated earlier, Intel needs that new Fab yesterday.

What’s amazing to me is they had the balls to tag amd and make it look bad lol. Without compromises. I guess extra power consumption and special motherboard and 2 power supplies is no compromise at all. Lol.

this is the Xeon MSE , as in Marketing Stunt Edition.
    Its a ridiculous product.
AMD could probably do similar stuff, super binned super overclocked limited sales.. I guess they don't do this crap because their CEO is not a child like Intel's and Nvidia.

This thing is getting reviewed as if its a real product... Smart I guess from a marketing stunt standpoint, just like Nvidias 3000$ whatever whatever gaming card.

Tom's cucked out too, how unpredictable. Imagine how bad it will get when Zen2 is out!
'The way it's meant to be fudged'
Reminding me of a certain reviewers guidebook and NDA shenanigans just this time it's not a gpu.

Lol tho if zen2 can't avx512 as fast I guarantee it'll be all you hear about, just like Sse2 back in the Athlon days.

Typical Intel release. Lets cherry pick silicon... still need 500+watts to feed it, make 100 and get the marketing engine running. We win. lol

This chip is no answer to TR. I doubt Intel has any miracles in the pipe to combat the real threat coming in the next few months. AMD is coming for Intels real bread and butter soon with Zen2 based Epyc. The high end workstation chips like this one are a pretty smallish market... and AMD has hit a low enough price point to make them attractive to hobbyists with a few extra bills to spend. Even with Intel only making 1500 or so I think they will have a hard time moving all of them quickly.

i am curious about the warranty of these cpu's/builds, because the life span must be ridiculous, i think this product will decay/fail much faster especialy if overclocked.
luckily this is not a mainstream cpu, still would be great to keep an eye on OEM's RMA of this thing....for science!

The 9900K can't do AVX512 either, however, no one that reviewed and praised it ever mentioned that. Because... It can do 5GHz, and that's all that matters. Honestly, the 9900K is the only CPU worth buying from Intel. Their entire Skylake-X lineup is a hot mess that's not really worth buying. Objectively, if you want the best mid-range CPU, go 9900K, for HEDT, go 2950X. If you want to save $300, get a 1950X. You have a use case for high core count, the 2970WX is a good value at $1100.

So... Intel is once again the "fastest". Just that you wont be able to actually, you know, buy one . Yeah, totally not vaporware.
While I don't have a favorite in this game this just isn't a good look, you can smell a whiff of desperation in the air.

Not just hide, but if it's not up to certain standards or it's just some publicity stunt.

Total system cost is just insane. I would take 2 AMD systems over the 1 Intel. No brainer!

Depends, for parallelizable tasks that can be efficiently sharded and distributed among multiple machines (which is a lot of things these days), yeah buying more machines is superior. However there's going to be network and other types of overhead. Factors which the developers of said software are constantly trying to improve on. Sometimes having one super powerful system may be necessary for mission critical stuff.

Well though, it'll probably just come down to how much support corporations get and how bug-free the software runs on each hardware solution. The practical performance considerations we're considering here are probably secondary to stability, standards, etc.

Posts like this that just have no clue. Used parts are not a viable comparison. Never will be. Someone has to buy the part at full price, first. Therefore, supply for them from the used market will dry up if EVERYONE stops buying full price for the CPU and starts buying them used. Like seriously, why do people always being up the "buy used CPUs from eBay for half the price" argument EVERY-SINGLE-TIME. Stop. It.

Most companies who dump servers/hardware on eBay or other similar sites do so because they are upgrading to something bigger and better. Granted sometimes they may be downsizing and don't need it anymore, but for the vast majority of things it's because they're getting better hardware. In this case, those companies are not going to be buying used hardware from eBay. They'll be the ones buying the W-3175X systems for their work load. Period.

I am an enthusiasts that uses my hardware for BOINC. I hardly ever buy new hardware to abuse the way I abuse them running the software that I run. I don't make money of it. I am less than 1% of the potential users who would need/want powerful hardware that turns to eBay for such stuff. These are the same people who buy used hardware for their home setups/labs and what have you. Someone who making money off the computers will not be using used hardware on eBay to buy something.

Therefore, comparing the eBay price of Item Y to compare it to the retail price of Item X is not a viable comparison. It's literally comparing an apple to a car engine.

That has nothing to do with what I am talking about. You're comparing eBay prices (used) to retail (new) prices. Stop doing it. It's proving nothing.

You're making the argument that an AMD system is better than an Intel system. That's not my point.

MY POINT IS STOP COMPARING USED EBAY PRICES TO NEW RETAIL PRICES.

    It's pretty simple.

Well said although I don't care about 5GHz, I care about the performance and IPC. If AMD can offer 9900k or better perf for 8 cores or more in most general use then I'm definitely in. I think we will see a lot more variation in product stack from AMD and I'm praying the Opteron 165 makes a comeback in form of cherry picked chips for WS/OC use.
