Yes companies go public because if it works out they make a boatload more than they did private. But I just loath the idea that wealth should be distributed by what is basically gambling.

It usually has more to do with their ability to raise money to pursue bigger and greater projects than they otherwise could.

In the grand scheme of things it can be a benefit to everyone involved, the company which gets the funds needed for projects, the investor who gets a chance to earn on their investment, and the customer who gets products that otherwise wouldn't exist.

Whenever you are predicting the future - however - there is a not insignificant risk of loss. Maybe that product you are dumping money into developing eon't be a hit, or will hit development problems meaning it never reaches the market.

I see what you are saying, but I just don't think there is any other way to do things. I mean, we have the whole Soviet Style Planned economy and control of the production means, but I feel like history has shown that this is not a viable alternative.

Very good advice, though I don't have a problem if you are well off enough to have a small trading account and you want to buy some individual stocks you really like. As long as you don't use margin and keep the account small the worst that can happen is you lose it and learn the lesson the hard way!

Yeah, setting aside a small amount of extra money to play in the stock market can be a fun and harmless, as long as you never gamble what you can't afford to lose :p

For my retirement account, I do the index card method above.

The only other small difference I'd probably not use target retirement funds. They would be too bond-heavy for my taste.

Yeah, I don't do that either. At some point I need to switch to a more bond heavy mix, but probably not until I'm like 55 years old.
