Intel, Microsoft, HP, Dell and Lenovo teaming up is surely a sign of the apocalypse.

The campaign, with the slogan “PC Does What?” is set to be announced Thursday at a Webcast featuring the companies’ top marketing executives, according to sources familiar with the companies’ plans. It will feature TV, print and online advertisements, sources said. The fact that Intel, Microsoft, HP, Dell and Lenovo all want to see more PCs sold is hardly news. But that they have gotten together on a unified campaign is a first.

Well, I, and my wife, are using Win 7, Pro, 64 Bit, still, and good old King MS is still trying to force us into a Win-10 upgrade, including just plain installing Windows 10 on our computers, by putting all the KBs necessary so Windows 10 will be installed, without us voluntarily intending it to happen.

I have to keep taking all these Windows 10 KBs, which have already been re-installed, time, after time, hunting them down, and re-uninstalling them, until I am so sick of King MS’ unhanded trickery I wish we had the $$$$ to Sue them in Court!

Guess we'll see. There's been a number of devices launched in the past week since Microsoft's even and the Surface Book seems to have struck a chord. The first run has sold out. Guessing that's probably only about 20k units but $1500+ is well above the average PC price, something like the Surface Book isn't going to sell in large numbers compared to the broader market in the Windows PC world.

It's been interesting to see all of the back and forth over Windows 10 in the blogosphere. So far all of the friends and family I've setup or spoken to about Windows 10 are pretty happy with it and it looks like a number of businesses are very interested in deploying starting towards the end of next year. And the upgrade process is getting users, by hook or by crook.

Lots of moving parts here. New devices, services and cloud integration and resistance by some to that, a rapid update process to Windows by its standards with a major update projected to come next month. And lots of eyes on the Surface Book and who well it's received and reviewed. The Surface Book is never going to sell in big numbers but it could become a standard of excellence and coolness in the PC world that's not had much of that lately, if ever, when is comes to devices especially anything known to consumers.

Why don't you want to upgrade to Windows 10? It is just fine. I've been running it on my main box since the early preview releases.

I can see it now.

"Run all your apps on your computer! Download this app so you can save photos to your computer!" <--- Pretty much what mobile apps do, and it is slower, more cumbersome and gives far less options than traditional PCs. And Microsoft will advertise that. Just watch. "Look, now you can finger peck in Excel! Just like you do on your phone, so you can't get any work done just like your phone!"

The problem with those things listed is that you are merely trying to sell PC gaming to the dedicated gaming crowd. The majority of users out there are not gamers and they are not interested in any of that.

The thing is, digital computer never left. It merely transformed in terms of form factor as technology allows more performance to be packed into smaller digital computer, and hence it becomes increasingly accessible (along with other factors such as ease of use of course). But once the performance reaches the level where it can serve the common needs such as communication, social networking and other typical internet access usage, people started moving on and never look back.

Of course there are things that will still require a dedicated desktop PC, these things will never change. But at the same time, they are also only required by certain people, rather than the general population. Gone are the days where everyone needs a PC at home just to access the internet, or chat with a friend through MSN messenger. It has nothing to do with marketing or promotion.

Therefore, trying to reverse the process is IMO futile, and unnecessary too.

Actually the group that is really dropping the ball is the home automation vendors ... we should have the home of the Jetsons by now ... automated voice control of the house ... robots everywhere doing stuff for us ... everything controlled by powerful home servers ... I think what is really going to push pcs, is the new little book pcs that come with the mounting hardware for attaching to the back of the pc, and most have wifi.

This saves massive amount of desk space vs having a notebook and dock, inorder to use a nice keyboard/mous/monitor.

I think the all-in-one units are just as bad as the tv/dvd combos. At least with the book pc i can keep my nice monitor, and most of the time i can upgrade the ram and hard drive when they get full (marketing speak).

For most people i know, you have to pry there keyboard/mouse/monitor from their cold dead hands, they have used them for years and are comfortable with them.


If you are any kind of pc gamer, you are not going to buy a retail box anyway. And if you do, the first thing you will have to do is swap the power supply, get a wiring adapter to work with the proprietary new mobo, and get a short video card.
