Intel i7 vs C2D6600

Hi guys,

My current system is a core2duo 600 + Asus P5W DH Deluxe combo. Was wondering what the performance increase would be if I jumped to an i7 based system, i.e. Gigabyte EX58-UD5 + i7 920. Would it be a noticeable increase?

I haven't been keeping up to date on chipsets and Motherboards these days, is this the package to get for the next year or so?

don't think you will notice too much difference in game with i7 compare to ur old build
 
I don't game much, mostly use the rig for programming, downloading, encoding etc. I read that most games seem to run better on the C2D platform, but that's not a big issue for me.
 
General CPU-intensive tasks do perform significantly faster on i7 CPUs. For downloading you don't see a difference, and depending on what kind of programming you do, you may or may not see a large difference. Encoding will be much faster though, especially if it's multithreaded since you're currently using a dual-core.
