I can unfortunately only run at 30hz, it's not a big deal but I'm used to a smoother 60hz experience.
I googled and some got it working on older Intel HD GPUs by installing the latest drivers and adding custom resolution, however I get "maximum bandwith exceeded" when I try to add even 31hz to 4k resolution.
Is there a trick around this?

I'm not 100% sure, but it might be the cable you are using can't handle the bandwidth. I believe you have to use HDMI 2.0 or above for 60hz/4k.

It's the motherboard, it supports max 4096x2160@30Hz so I guess 4k which is a bit lower won't go to 60hz.

Right just because the onboard GPU has support for 4k@60 doesn't mean your motherboard does. There were a surprising number of first-gen Kaby Lake motherboards that shipped with HDMI 1.4 ports, even after the chip was hyped-up as as an amazing HDR experience.
