Intel Discounting Xeon CPUs Under Pressure from AMD EPYC

If you or somebody you know is looking to make a server purchase any time in the future, ServeTheHome is telling us that Intel is going as far as matching prices on quoted EPYC CPUs from AMD. Obviously, you will be needed to build out your own infrastructure on these purchases, so the impact to the market should be fairly small. And that said, depending on the server system you are building, the price of the CPU might not be much in the overall build cost. What all of this shows is that Intel is certainly feeling the AMD heat in the marketplace.

From what we have been hearing from a number of customers, discounts are happening at quantity levels *well* below 1000 CPUs. Discounts or incentives are reaching well into the double-digit percentages. For some customers, if they are evaluating an AMD EPYC purchase versus a competitive Intel Xeon part, Intel is more or less matching the price.

Glad to see AMD doing well in the CPU dept. I just built one hell of a workstation using Epyc CPU's a handful of months ago, actually let me go get the invoice and look.
intel doing bad doesn't mean AMD is doing well, ppl still don't trust them.

Can't blame Intel here. Remember, they're not trying to get back 10% of lost market, they're trying to prevent a 1-2% loss that hasn't happened yet. Intel got caught with their pants down in the early 2000's. I think they are making sure something like that doesn't happen again.

Even so, AMD only managed to capture about 17% of the server market. Embarrassing to Intel, you bet, but Intel quickly recovered all that lost ground as they stomped all over AMD by delivering multiple generations of dual core and ultimately a quad core before AMD was able to deliver their promised (beforehand) quad.

AMD hasn't had that kind of success (if you can call it that) since. And, it's difficult to see that happening again right now for them.

Glad to see competition, I feel Intel is probably upset now that they are heavily cutting into their profit margins, but you can’t be greedy forever.

Except you won't be able to buy any lol (yes I realize this is for xeon, but the same issues are happening to vendors in the xeon space)

JP Morgan says Intel's chip shortage is 'worsening' and will hurt fourth-quarter PC sales by up to 7%
  • J.P. Morgan believes the processor shortage for Intel chips will significantly impact PC industry sales later this year.
  • “Our conversations with PC vendors indicate that the shortage, which started in small magnitude in 3Q, has been progressively worsening and is likely to have the maximum impact in 4Q18,” the firm’s Asia Pacific technology analyst Gokul Hariharan says.

" Intel is more or less matching the price."
Also with more vulnerabilities, more or less. Well, more, actually.

I am currently having to patch our entire UCS environment and I am fucking SICK of it because of all the intel vulnerability bullshit. It's a lot of work and we gain is less performance.

post some benchmarks of that monster....sounds like that was a lot of money.

I am super happy that AMD is pushing competition. We all win because of it and Intel will have to step up their game in response.

Intel needs to discount their current i9 offerings, not sure why they are still selling at the RRP price since it debuted a year ago, if Intel is discounting their Xeons to counter AMD's EPYC CPU's, they should do the same with their i9's. Even AMD's top dog, the 2990WX beats the i9 7980XE in most cases.

Capitalism baby.
Prices on all items sure are cheaper where socialism ideas are more prevalent — and the general public in socialistic countries have lots of money to buy things like high end computing processors!

Righhhhhhht......

Capitalism is why Intel’s product prices could go up without competition, but also why it’s coming down now. Competition is good. Capitalism breeds innovativation and competition.

I'm really hang over, and at first glance I read "discontinuing"

That would've shocked me. This is a bit shocking as well, now it's time they discontinue :D their enthusiast cpus as well. By 30% for specdown and another 30% on top to be competitive with ryzen :p.

Reminds me too much of the AMD vs Intel lawsuit involving Intel giving rebates so customers wouldn't use AMD. It's literally too damn similar for comfort. I wonder if Intel is even really struggling with 14nm/10nm woes as much as being reported and they needed a excuse to have TSMC to start making their chips to curb AMD's supply chain while boost their own and discounting/writing off chip prices to prevent AMD market share from growing further. I don't trust Intel at all they are shady as **** and everyone knows it.

intel doing bad doesn't mean AMD is doing well, ppl still don't trust them.
Yeah ok, but they should totally trust Intel's security and monopoly behavior?

Intel got caught with their pants down in the early 2000's.
Correction they were caught with a lawsuit that they had to settle out of court for because god knows they were guilty as hell, but AMD decided it would be cheaper than fighting lawyers over for god knows how long they could drag it out indefinitely.
