It's a new chipset, so probably, but since this is a rumor, won't know till it's confirmed.

Honestly not sure what they could improve over Z370 / Z390 outside of pulling an AMD and hooking up a PCIe switch for 'more lanes'. As it stands, Z390 + 9-series CPU has more connectivity than most enthusiasts could use.

65 Watts TDP for the non K version the only thing holding up these enthusiast cpus in the past were the high thermals.
Pretty crappy silicon at the bottom end. The 4/8 10100 is only 3.2 ghz vs the 7700 with the same tdp.
The 6/12 10500 at least matches the clocks of the 8700, again with the same tdp.
Going up the ladder, the 8/16 10700 seems to be a slight regression to the 9900 with a 100mhz lower base clock at 65 tdp.
At the very top, the 10900 finally looks to be great silicon with 10 cores hitting 3.0ghz at 65w. Hopefully, CML isn't reserved for 10 core only in the 10th gen lineup.

They're desktop CPUs... TDP is pretty nebulous here. We'd need to see how they compare versus 6700K / 7700K, as well as 8700K and 9900K.

Shouldn't expect miracles, but if the K parts are relatively nice bins, that's a bonus. They should all hit 5.0GHz.

Intel has been pretty accurate with their base tdp ratings. Not as precise as the Xeon lineup, but still rather close.

Assuming the 10100k does clock as well as the 7700k, having a lower tdp/cooling requirements shouldn't be to much to ask for.
 
Oh man, that brought back some memories.
I remember when that comic was new, circa late 2011, with the release of the FX Bulldozer CPUs, and AMD just going "moar cores!!!", well ahead of a market or industry being ready for so many cores (FX cores were admittedly weak with only about 55% IPC compared to Sandy Bridge at the time and terrible SMP scaling due to CMT).

That comic was extemely justified from 2011-2016, but is highly ironic from 2017-present. :D

It was essentially a trade of 6 threads for 2 physical cores (8700k to 9700k). All depends on what you're working on. In many cases, the 8700k would be faster.

That being said, it's kind of hard to argue against HT (except possibly the security side of it) for Intel, especially since AMD "gives it away" in almost every chip it sells from $50 to $1999. Intel's product segmentation was the additional threads per core, where AMD's product segmentation was how many cores it has as they pretty much all had their version of HT.

Cool for those current 8600/8700/9600/9700/9900K users, don't think those will feel much of an urge changing motherboard, incl me for a very modest increase. Hopefully the next Ryzen does very well.
