It looks as though someone has gotten their hands on an Intel Core i7-7700K and overclocked it to 7GHz. The site is in Russian but, what I gathered using Google translate is that the guy that overclocked this processor had to disable two cores as well as HyperThreading. No mention of what type of cooling was used. We did a little i7-7700K overclocking here as well last week.

Hmmm...disabled HT, and 2 cores AND raise VCC to 2.0v.

"If we put a twin turbo on that 1.6l and throw a little NO2 into the mix she'll do 10 seconds in the quarter" Sadly the engine explodes after 5 seconds....

This is why I never really get these insane overclocks anymore. Whats the point other than e-penis bragging rights?

Show me what the chip can do with its features functional. Not with it half gimped...

Just like cars, site me an endurance or long lasting build not some overboosted pos that makes turbo sounds until it blows up..

So far, I'm still glad I went with 6700k instead of waiting for the 7700k.

I want a stable, non-gimped overclock that I can leave on 24/7. Watercooling, of course. Give me at least 5 GHz and I'll be happy.

7 GHz gimped and not running for long periods? No thanks. I want productive overclocks, not e-peen bragging rights. It's cool, sure. Nice to see. Just not practical. I'm just getting to the point where I want something significant from Intel. Been spoiled too long, I guess.

And here we go again with the naysayers. I swear this forum is starting to go soft.

Who the hell cares if the OC wasn't stable? It's about pushing the envelope and seeing what the silicon is capable of. People don't build top fuel dragsters to be driven on the road, or even build them to not require full engine rebuilds every other race. Same principal applies here.

TBH, I'm amazed the chip got this far with the current process node, as I was under the impression they had hit a wall especially when they brought about the 3D transistors in Ivy Bridge. I'm also thoroughly impressed they did it with 2 cores enabled. It wasn't too long ago that these insane speed runs required all but one core disabled.

Very doubtful, 14nm LLP just doesn't support that. a Pentium pure dual with no extra die space for iGPU and HT could get over 5Ghz, the common range is 4.7-4.8 if lucky on good cooling.

The trend isn't looking good.. a 67% overclock using LN2 compared to some other LN2 overclocks previously mentioned in [H]..

    2013 - Asrock managed to overclock a 3.5GHz Core i7-4770K to 6.5GHz = 86% increase

    2012 - Core i7-3770k running at 7.06GHz = 102% increase

    2011 - Kyle at AMD Austin watches a FX 8150 on LN2 overclocked to 8GHz = 158% increase

Well if I can't rely on LN2 for double the performance then why even try?

Its like taking a particular type of car engine and seeing if you can beat the highest recorded rpm.
    Shrug.
    Let them have their fun.

There is a kind of point to it, it shows to some degree how well optimised the chipset/mobo and cpu are for higher frequencies.

Didn't someone already do like 8.7GHz?

I wanna see new GHz. Old GHz are boring.

The naysayers should start a website called soft[ocp]. It'd about pushing limits guys.

Most of us are older now. We have become practical in our lives.

There's no problem with practicality. . In fact must people our age now just pay a few dollars to watch others do dumb risky shit. That's the joy of it all. The great human filter :)

Funny, maybe not with the disabled cores.
