Intel 7700k to AMD 5900x

I will be the first to say it. What will you be using this system for? Gaming, editing, streaming, etc.

What are the rest of your specs?

Gaming, surfing the internet, email, and maybe a little bit of VMs.

Intel 7700k, 32 GB of ram, 2 TB NVMe, 4 TB 7200rpm WD Black hard drive, EVGA Geforce RTX 2060 Super (for right now don't need much more yet)
 


You have to keep in mind that your GPU will be a limiting factor. The tests above were done with a 6900xt.

However, if you are doing things like VMs or encoding, at the same time as gaming ----- you will benefit a lot.

Only in a small set of games will you see a huge difference. Nothing really in normal desktop usage, though as previous poster said perhaps if you run a bunch of VMs you will.
 
I went from 7700k to 3960X and I was actually surprised how much of a difference it made in day to day snappiness of general office and windows stuff, not just the work stuff I bought it for.

I imagine the Zen 3 stuff would be that and then some.
 
7700k to a 5900x will be a very nice jump!

I went from a 5960x (Haswell-e), that with my overclock could spank the crap out of a 7700k. When I jumped to a 5950x, the difference was night and day.
 
I went from a 7700k to 10850k. 4 cores to 10 cores at the same 5ghz frequency. Same amount of RAM and same 1080 ti video card. Pushing a 2560x1440 gsync diplay. Didn't notice a difference day to day. Primarily single player gaming.

I'll add that I went from a 2600k @ 4.6 ghz to a 7700k @ 5 and also didn't notice a difference. I occasionally wonder if I'd still be happy sporting that 2600k. I think it's possible.
 
I went from an overclocked 6700K (essentially the same as the 7700K) to a 5900X and saw a massive performance difference in many-core workloads. Since you mentioned VMs, I'd say it's worth it.

I went from 2600K to 9900K to 12900K. Don't notice any difference. I only play DOTA2 though.
 
I went from a R7 1700 to a 3900X and noticed a HUGE difference. I'm planning on moving up to a 16-core V-Cache equivalent when those drop next year because I suspect i'll see another gigantic improvement.

I play a ton of CPU intensive games (simulators, looking for more than MOAR FPS) and also do a fair amount of transcoding and other incredibly cpu heavy tasks.
 
I went from a 7700K to a 5800X. A nice upgrade and I did notice a nice performance boost in some of my games. I'm still stuck with a 1070 so not a huge improvement in FPS, but overall the rig feels snappier.
 
The 5900X can walk and chew gum. The 7700K can't. I did this switch for general office work and don't regret it for a moment.
