Is it possible to install programs to a USB Thumb Drive from which I can then run on any computer? Is this impossible because of the registry?

Its possible with some programs, not with others, because of needed registry entries or config files in the Windows directory. Depending on the program, it may not use the registry(rare these days), or it may not need it to run. As for what will run and won't, its pretty much guess and check, although do note that most MS software requires the registry far more than ever necessary(they like to do this). If a program requires registry entries to run, you could always export them to a registry file on the drive, and import them to any computer you wish to use, assuming you're not doing this in the first place to get around lack of programs/access in a school environment. Sysinternals provides a tool called regmon that can be used to watch a programs's usage of the registry. Load it in the background, while you open the program in question, and watch its usage of registry keys. You from there should be able to find where the program keeps any of its registry entries, then use regedit to export the program's highest level container. (Typically located in HKLM\software\ and then the company's name or the program's name)
