Insane GPU prices in 2022 WTF?

It's a rich man's game. And Nvidia knows it. Nvidia knows there are enough consumers out there that would buy their overpriced cards without blinking. People who will purchase a 4090 for the most part will be upper middle class and higher. Those who can't afford it yet still purchase, those are the sheep.

Well, I just built my system. I am not buying anything for 5 years. Hell with that Shunn.

yea. electricians, HVAC guys, and plumbers. XD
That what I always told the GC of a Jobsite, without someone that knows what they are doing, it's just a storage building, Pretty much all a General Contractor is good for!

Seeing the insane prices of the RTX-4090 @ $1700 to $2000 is ridiculous. Even the RTX 4080 for $1,200 is stupid, I bought my RTX-3080 for $799 back in Nov. 2020, so why is the next gen version 50% higher now?

The RTX-1080 launch price was $599
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_10_series

The RTX-2080 launch price was $699
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_20_series

The RTX-3080 launch price was $799
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_30_series

So past trends should put the RTX-4080 @ $899, certainly not $1200.
Yep, there's the rampant global inflation. Also the fact that a very big market for nvidia, Russia, is closed for them now.
If prices are high now, wait until China invades Taiwan 😏

Almost five years ago I remember saying how game graphics are generally designed around the lowest basic gaming GPU for sales, and how awesome it will be when the baseline is the rx 480. Wow did that not pan out. 480s and 580s are almost still worth their launch price, and APUs keep on lowering the bar due to lack of availability and unaffordability

If I'm reading his benchmarks correct, @ 1440p gaming the 4090 is 28% faster than the 3090 Ti, and @ 4k gaming it's 33% faster than the 3090 Ti. The rumored RTX-4090 being 60% faster, I think was meant in reference to the RTX-3080

So from what I have read quick this morning, the 4090 is anywhere from 30% to 50% better performance than the 3090 Ti, @ 4k is a good 50% better, @ 1440p is about 33%

The RTX-4090 is impressive. But it better for a whopping $1600 and a power draw like a space heater.

I'll wait for the RTX-4080 16GB price drop next year and grab one when pricing is back to reality

I'm not a 4k gamer I play at 34"Ultrawide 120hz refresh, so I don't need a card that gives more than 120fps @ 3440 X 1440

What's really pissing me off is that I have an opportunity right now and could probably offload my RTX 3080 8GB and just wait a month and get an RTX 4080 16GB because I'm busy right now and won't really need a good card for a month.

But the PRICE DIFFERENCE. It's almost unjustifiable to sell my 3080 8GB and have to pay up to $600 more to get the current card. I mean, $650 for my card is a fair price I think used. But the new cards are out of reach. I always sell and just upgrade. But Nvidia may have just broken a cycle of always selling and moving up that has worked for me for nearly 20 years.

There's not $600 worth of performance improvement with a 4080 16GB.

I play alot of Destiny 2 and at ultrawide, alot of scenes really dipped below 80 FPS, sometimes 60fps with my 3080. But with the 4090 its constantly 120+ frames. Havent seen below 100, ever, at any point.

My card is nothing special, but tbh I felt alot more heat off my old 1080ti than I feel off this card. It pulls 450w but it also plays at 62c so. It's getting chilly in the fall, and I miss the heat, actually.

Pricing I just don't understand with Nvidia.

RTX 3090 at launch $1499
RTX 4090 at launch $1599

RTX 3080 at launch $699
RTX 4080 at launch $1199

So the 3090 to 4090 price difference isn't even 10% but the 3080 to 4080 is a 75% price increase, WTF
Why is the 4090 just a little bit of a price difference over the 3090, but the 4080 is crazy higher than the 3080.

And then performance difference, the 4090 is a beast and significantly faster and better than the 3090 by about 75% or more, but they share very similar pricing. Yet the 4080 is showing to be only like 50% faster than the 3080, but costs a ton more than the 3080.

Makes no sense.

MY POINT:
Why is the 4090 just a little bit more more expensive than the 3090, but there's a massive performance difference, major upgrade in the 4090. But then nVidia is asking a super premium price for the 4080 over the 3080, and the performance difference between the two is much smaller.

The higher price just means they can't make enough cards to satisfy demand. They are trying to cut out the scalpers from the equation. Plus there is still plenty of last gen cards at retailers, a cheap 4xxx would make those unsellable.

I'm sure after the initial rush and the clearing of old inventory there will be a significant price cut especially for the 4080.

It is a luxury item, if you think it's too much don't buy it. There is no clearer message you can send. If you whine but still buy it, then you are justifying their pricing.

Just wait until the tariffs expire at the end of this year. It's going up by 25%

Or they think mining craze prices are what most will accept. The spec difference between the 4090 and 4080 is more in line with a xx80ti vs a xx70 card, but the price is in the xx80ti range. Will be interesting to see what happens after the AMD cards come out. If the previews are anything to go by the 7900 xtx should outperform the 4080 by quite some margin and the 4080 is 20% higher MSRP. Nvidia's only saving grace then might be RT, but hopefully AMD's RT performance has improved a lot in the second generation.

Scalpers ain't gonna be cut. They are the ones who are going to buy up the scarce supply.

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=4090+rtx&_sacat=0&rt=nc&LH_Sold=1&LH_Complete=1

Some model are already being sold $2000-$2200 how much profit after tax and ebay cut is left ? With a 13% cut you are left $28 of profit if you paid 7% in tax on a $1600 price tag.

Those selling at 2250, make $245, before counting the expense (time, shipping, issues).

$1200 4080 16GB could be really hard to scalp with any interesting profit, specially the $1300 AIB models.

It will certainly happen at first like always, but in large-relevant amount ? You start making a single dime at $1475, $1600 for the $1300 versions.
For a card probably a worst than the $999 7900xtx and new no warranty worry 3090Ti sometime at $1500 right now.

LOL just 37% faster than the RTX 3080, but it cost went up from $699 to $1200.

F you nVidia.

Where as the 4090 is a beast and like 75% faster and better than the 3090 but the cost difference is only a hundred bucks.

What is nVidia smoking with these bizarre prices compared to performance. So the fastest card is only $100 more expensive this year, but the slower card is $500 more expensive. WTF?

If you take third party cards in Europe, prices went up from 800-900€ to 1.800-2.200€

Just insane. Inflation didn't go up that much since 2020.

Again the RTX 3090 was like $1500 at launch. And the new 4090 is $1600. Basically the same price. But the performance is a huge upgrade with the 4090, big time, at least 75%. Yet it only costs 5% to 10% more then the previous gen card.

But the RTX 3080 was $699 at launch and now the 4080 is $1200 at launch but is only 37% faster. Yet it costs like 70% more than the previous gen card.

So why is the 4090 only $100 more and 75% faster, but the 4080 is $500 more and only 37% faster.

Explain this please.

Have you been to the grocery store this year?

Why was the RTX-3090 $1500 in 2020, and the new much better RTX-4090 is only a hundred bucks more, two years later, that's only a 6% increase in price.

But why in the hell is the RTX-4080 a whopping 75% more than the previous gen? And the performance difference is a much smaller gap than between the 3090 and 4090.

Maybe so they can lower the price and then crow about how it's the deal of the century after all the old stock 30 series cards are finally sold?

Inflation and the greater cost for wafers compared to last gen is to blame. Microsoft is losing $200 per each Xbox X as an example. Sony and Meta raised prices in most markets.

Are 3 series going up in price again now that the 4 series is nowhere to be found?

Consoles have generally been sold at a loss for the first few years as they make the money back on licensing fees for software etc.

One would almost suspect that there is still a tidy stockpile of 3080's out there that they want to look more attractive to potential buyers.

Because it's faster than anything in the previous gen? So instead of destroying sales for unsold 3xxx cards they can just layer in the 4xxx on top of those cards. What is AMD going to do, out compete them? That could happen, but there's still months of time between their generations and brand loyalty for nvidia is strong.

Are 3 series going up in price again now that the 4 series is nowhere to be found?
I've heard some people compiling data manually say yes, that they've been rising 3-4% recently. ebay's data seems to point to a leveling off at least in prices.

This time last year, there was nothing to buy and me only paying $879 for the Holo tier RTX 3070 card at that time makes me feel very lucky, I have not lost a lot of my value at that price compared to others that bought Nvidia, it may be a 2-year-old product being it took 2 years to fill the orders on Nvidia's part selling every dam thing out the back door to miners for Greed.

(loyalty for nvidia is strong), You can go down with the sinking ship all you want.

Honestly, I would love to have an RTX-4080, but not for $1200+ no freaking way. Just on principal, I won't give my money to the greedy green team.

Even with inflation factored in that card should be selling for $899 tops.

A big reason why Nvidia would have rised the price tags, would obviously to me, looking at the scalping and average actual price of the last 2 years, which could have been a gross misculation, but would have been quite different from Iphone and CPU I would imagine in terms of signal.
This is exactly what I think happened. Jensen looked at the ASP of the RTX 2x00 and 3x00 series, had a good think, and probably decided "Yeah, a new Maserati or Bugatti this year sounds good. Maybe another boat, too?" before he got on stage and chose to raise prices yet again.
I have been up until now a loyal nVIDIA customer since 2004 and the GeForce 6x00 days. Enough is enough. I'm voting with my wallet.

Inflation hit us really hard last year. Fortunately there should be some other lower cost RTX 4000 models coming out down the line.
Inflation is not why its $1200.

RTX 3080 launch price was $699, not $799.

And just looking at die classes here, The AD103 has more in common at least from a die size and memory config standpoint with GA104 than GA102 from last gen. The highest end GA104 based card was the 3070 Ti which had a $599 MSRP. So $599 to $1199. Literal doubling of price.

Get use to the price, with no one able to compete with TSMC, they can charge whatever they want. Nvidia is just passing on the cost to everyone.

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/why-nvidias-4080-4090-cost-so-damn-much
AMD might be our saviour here though. They have a small part of the GPU market and they were competitive in raster last gen and in this gen they seem to be keeping sane prices. The price of the 4090 is about as expected and it's halo product status along with it's performance makes the price fine. The issue is the with the 4080 where the cheapest variant is more than twice expensive as my 3080 for about 1.4-1.5x the performance. Thankfully they are struggeling a lot to move the 4080s so if AMD drops with significant amount of stock then we might see a massive price slash on the 4080 cards. Don't really need a new GPU for my main atm. as my 3080 is still holding up fine at 1440p, but would like a faster card for my secondary. Basically something around 80-90% of 3080 performance in raster with 12gb of ram in the 500 or so price range. Hopefully AMD delivers.
