Infrared mouse receiver to all purpose Ir receiver?

Is that posible to do?
I want to control and htpc with a remote, and I have and extra Ir receiver for a mouse that I'm not using, any ideas?

the mouse receievr is probably tuned for the mouse only... luckaly ir recievers are pretty easy to build, and dirt cheap to buy. i would say its not worth the trouble
