So I decided to check my HDD out to see what state it's in.. There's some warnings, but I don't really understand what they mean or if I should be worried.

Hoping someone can shed some light on it. This is an external harddrive that I converted into an internal one. Couple of years old.

It's not my primary drive with the OS, but I'd like to know if I have to start backing everything up (which I probably should do anyway)

There are 269 reallocated sectors. This may or may not indicate a real problem. If the number is stable that is not a problem. If it grows regularly the drive may die soon. More troubling are the 7 pending sectors. These are sectors that the drive had data written to them but the drive can no longer read them back. A drive is no good to you if it can not read what it writes. If this continues you will loose valuble data.

Yes. Backup now.

Ditto on what drescherjm said. If it were me, I'd be looking for a new HD to purchase.

Wow what a great piece of preventative maintenance!

Props for taking the initiative, though you should have had backups already. :D

Thanks. Most of the important files only take about 400mb, so I'll just pop that on my SSD and let the HDD die gracefully =P

Granted, 24 gigs of music can be annoying to redownload. I guess I might get a new HDD soon and put those on there.
