Imac 27" retina is hurting my eyes

Hey guys
I decided to try the Imac retina with 27 inches to have it as a support pc for my main one, but I've found a major problem: It's hurting my eyes.
I already lowered the contrast from 90% to 50%.
One of my main questions in here would be wether the same happens to other 27" IPS panels or not. I was also going to buy the LG 85R monitor (recommended to me by several awesome people in this forum), but I would like to know if the same will happen to me.
Also, this Imac has a super awesome vibrant scree, would the LG monitor be able to cope with it?

First figure out what about it is hurting your eyes, before spending more money.

Changing things like font rendering slightly wrong is enough to induce eye strain. Also your general environment, iMac's have the design biff of a glossy screen -which means glare can be a bad issue in anything other than a dark room (some people who must part-time as Vampires actually like this design "feature").
 
I can still return this imac (10 days left). It is glossy but has no reflections (only in complete dark back screen but still barely noticeable). I use it in a common room of over 30 square meters where I'm alone. The feeling of hurting is not solved at night.
What's hurting my eyes is the screen of the imac, the rest of the components are confortable to look at.
 
Well if it's not glare, and you have the backlight set to a comfortable level, I'm not sure what else the problem could be.

You could try installing f.lux and see if that helps at all.
If it does, the problem may be something other than flicker. (since f.lux won't affect that)

If you have a proper camera with manual shutter speed control, you could try TFT Central's method of testing for PWM to see if that is the problem with your iMac. http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/content/pulse_width_modulation.htm#testing
Apple are usually good at avoiding PWM with their products, but I wonder if this flicker could be related to the way they're driving the 5K screen over a single link.
 
what is that flux supposed to do?
I just installed it
I feel a bit better with flux (eye sore decreased from 100% to 60%)
Does flux affect video games and movies?

You can use it to adjust the color temperature (and it can do so automatically at sunset) which is supposed to reduce eyestrain.

If that solves your problem, the issue may not be flicker.
 
I think the issue is both (it is too bright even reducing the brightness level and there's flickering). Flux does help me with the first one.
 
Has someone used this imac?
I'm seriously considering returning it btw
 
F Lux changes the colour temperature and screws up the gamma, colours and contrast to do so (industry standard is 6500k). The 5k iMac might use PWM which is likely the main issue combined with high brightness. It also uses Plasma Deposition Coating which is far less reflective than glossy coatings, as well as more vibrant than man matte coatings panels like the LG 27MB85R-B use.
 
Check for PWM with TestUFO (instructions are at the top).

As already said, there's a possibility that the 5k imac uses PWM; though, that's kind of odd considering Apple products haven't used PWM in years. Regardless, test it and find out. If it uses PWM, then return it.

It changes the color temperature, nothing else.
I was not suggesting this as a permanent solution, just something to see if the issue was "glare" from the screen being too "bright" to see if it helped

The video I linked to above showed that the display was flickering at 100% brightness.
Even on displays which have PWM, they don't usually flicker at maximum brightness.
That's why I suspect it may be an issue to do with the way that they are driving 5K over a single link. It's also possible that this may only affect some systems and not all of them.

Have you measured the changes with a colorimter (rhetorical question)? I have and it does what I claimed it does; F Lux is trash made for people who don't care about colour quality and aren't smart enough to reduce their monitors brightness.

There are many monitors which always use PWM, but you're probably right about the 5k iMac since the rest of Apple's displays are PWM free.

It's likely not PWM flicker - at least it doesn't look like it judging from the video. I've actually experienced similar flickering to that on a PWM-free monitor, but I was unable to pinpoint the root cause of the issue and ended up exchanging it instead. Still, hopefully emir7 can check for PWM so we have an idea. I'm basically assuming his malaise is directly related to ambient light reflections and brightness settings.
 
I have the Brightness and Contrast turned way down on the monitors I have....
also use a antec 6 bias light kit they sell on amazon.
 
emir7, what brightness do you have the monitor set to? You haven't said yet.
 
I changed the brightness level from 90% to 50%.
Flux has suddenly given the screen a yellow color to everything I look at the monitor, I sent it to the bin but the yellow tint is still there (it's actually way worse than before). Until I get rid of it I can't even do the test.

I did the test. I don't know how to interpret it though:

Up to 25 fps I just see a white line, it's blurry though.
At 32 fps I see 70% of the time one line and 30% 2 white lines very close to each other.
At 48 fps I see 2 white lines all the time
At 64 fps I see 3-4 white lines all the time

I come from a TN panel where after 10 hours of use my eyes hurt. In here it's the same after 30 minutes. If I watch a movie, after 8-10 minutes my eyes feel sore and have to stop watching it (if I force it the pain increases and can't enjoy the movie).

It should be a constant 60 fps; shrink the window or run at a lower resolution if you have to but make sure it says valid while running.

Interpreting is fairly simple: if the device is PWM-free, you'll see one blurred line moving across the screen; however, a device using PWM will show multiple lines in very close proximity to each other.

What you're currently seeing is judder from the test not maintaining FPS properly. Fix that, then report back.

Also, 50% may be too bright - and if it's PWM free I would very likely consider dropping the brightness down even more. I still think your eye-strain is directly related to the brightness setting.
 
what brightness level do you have with your LG 85r? And with other monitors?
I lowered it to 40%.
 
I used the LG at 0 brightness, which ended up being 120 cd/m2. Monitors have varying brightness/backlight intensity, they are not uniform across the board. While the LG is 120 cd/m2 at 0 brightness, the imac could be even lower, or even higher. We can't say - and there's no real reviews of it.

Find out if it uses PWM first.
 
I did the test while saying valid. The results are different (it also turns out it's always 60 fps, what changes is pixels per second):

Up to 32 pixels per second: 1 blurry line

48 pixels per second: one very blurry line

64 pixels per second: Half of the time one very blurry line and the other half 2 blurry lines.

I changed the pixel separation to 1.5k to help me see the number of lines
 
0% brightness??? But that kills color vibrancy!
While watching a movie at 0% brightness the color seems to fade away compared to 50% brightness for example.
 
0% on the LG was 120 cd/m2 - the standard for sRGB content. The LG has a particularly high minimum brightness; again, brightness is not uniform across monitors.
 
If I get very close to the screen I watch several lines. how close should I be while doing the test?
Before I was quite far away btw

It really does not sound like it uses PWM, especially if you are seeing only 1 blurred line. The occasional second line sounds like judder from it struggling to keep FPS. You cannot check luminance without a colorimeter. Either turn down the brightness, return it, or seek something else.
 
At 64 pixels per frame something like that, but the lines are crisper.
I made a photo with my mobile but I don't know how to put it in here. In the photo it looks way worse than with my eyes. It shows 5 crisp lines.

Nikyo, I know it's a lot to ask, but could you make a photo of your screen doing the test at 64 pixels per frame and paste it or whatever in here? I think the green line is easier to watch and 1.5k pixel separation is good too.
I've been looking at pics in the web, this one is exactly what happens to me at 64 pixels per frame (I mean the second picture, the one with 5 clear white lines):

I should also add that it seems to have more lines when you make a photo compared to when you just stare at it.

I must also add I love this monitor, so if The hurting part goes away I'd love to keep it :)
Text is SUPER crisp, I mean it couldn't be sharper, it just couldn't. The colors are awesome as well and most important it is 5k but doesn't show ghosting (I've even played a mmorg game in 5k named regnum online and it works perfectly).
The scaling is also perfect: I see no difference in detail while watching a 1080p movie in here and in my 17" TN monitor. Only if you get really close (1 inch away from the screen) there is a SLIGHT difference, a bit more blurry in this screen, but hardly noticeable at all (I had to find images with very tiny text in the background, and even so it's hardly noticeable at 1 inch distance and no difference at all at 1-2 feet away). It has 0 dead pixels and 0% light bleeding (yeah, after seeing so many forums where it's said it always happens with IPS panels at night I just couldn't believe it myself).

There's only one con, which is that I can't look at the screen because my eyes hurt, but apart from that it's the perfect screen.

Taking a picture will show nothing; the test is made for eye-tracking. The picture method only works if the line is still.

What you're seeing at 64 pixels per second is not PWM, no, it's the line moving too fast for your eyes to be able to track it. Again, the blurred line you saw on lower setting indicates that it uses direct current, not PWM. Your eye-strain is related to either brightness settings, or reflections from ambient light sources, most certainly not PWM-flicker. Return it, turn down the brightness, or move on.
