Ignorance - stupid people = teh suck

ya this thread pwns :D

I have a few stories like this, mostly of idiote being proven wrong by me... hehe the looks on some of thier faces are priceless

"You mean, I'm actually wrong... I never would have thought"

meuh,I had to make a new account after being on here for 2 years, im not a noobie  :D

my friend bought a gateway about 2 years ago, i was suppose to be "top of the line" but you know how top of the line gateway is...anyways, he was complaining about how it was running everquest slow and took about 15-20 minutes to boot up...ran some virus checks and stuff...

20+ viruses found

needless to say that computer was doomed, although he still uses it. i have no idea why.

there used to be an individual that I tried helping with his comp .. one call he gave me after he picked up his computer from me complaining that he was getting a keyboard error when turned the computer on and .." I wasnt getting that error before you worked on it!.." .. I told him to plug his keyboard in correct ps2 port ..problem solved

I dont know what this guy kept doing on his comp , but I would take ..clean it up and it would run great for me ..he would take the comp and week later he was having problems again .. He finally got mad at me (again  ) ..and told me he was having problems because I was puting pirated software on his computer and thats why he was getting "Illegal Operations" all the time ...

I just kind of looked at him with one eye brow raised , and my mouth half open ...

needless to say ..I dont work on his computer anymo .. :)

Heres something stupid, advertising popup blockers in popups.
Calling a chip that cant run newer games for shit "Extreme graphics"
Thermal paste ALLLLLL over a processor.
Some people you can give word for word instructions to, and they look right in your freakin eyes noddin their head saying "yep..ok i get it" Then call you 10 min later asking the same damn thing you just explained to them.

lolz this stupid friend can't even say noob properly he says Nub lolz, and he still doesn't beleive me to this day...

edit: ignorance is a bliss (not)

I got in an arguement with some ignorant ass that claimed he was studying something in CIS. He was trying to convince me and a friend that the 5950 was faster than a 9800Pro/XT because it has a higher clockspeed. No matter what I said he wouldn't buy it.

People who say they are M$ techs are the worst. I used to do internet tech support a few years ago. These were always the tards that would scream and yell that our auth or email server was hosed, when of course every time it was them fucking up simple data entry.

My Best story though was, I worked graves. 5am, older woman calls me from Eureka (middle of no where in cali) and is bitching that she can only d/l 4k a second on her dialup and can't stay online for more then 14 hours at a time. After explaining to her that some people in cities would kill for that kind of dialup stability. I told her, "When you dial back up I'll watch you for a few minutes to make sure you don't get disconnected and your connection is active." She then screams into the phone, "OMG! YOU CAN SEE MY HAIR!!!"

LOL!!! Too funny!! I love it when people tell me they've deleted Windows 98, can you fix it?
I ask, " Can you get to the desktop?" They say," What's my desk got to do with anything?"

Friend of mine has a 256Mb fx5600, and thinks he's happy and can run all of today's games on it. When I showed him an fps comparison graph, such as this one, his immediate response is: "Bullshit, I get more than a 100 FPS in Firestarter!!".... After that trying to tell him anything is futile since he'll keep rambling about how all benchmarks are bullshit, esepcially that one.

Well the worst is when ppl try to explain me that AMD cheats as a Celeron 1.7 ghz is faster then a XP 2000+ which runs at 1.63 ghz.

And yeah even have come across many ppl who say that a Geforce 4 mx 440 with 128 DDR ram is as fast as Radeon 9800 pro wth 128 mb Ram.. I agree with them (join em when you cant beat em)....

*edited the quote for language*

Now what your friend said is indeed a big, steaming pile of horsesh*t. That FX5600 is barely faster than an FX5200! And we all know what a big, steaming pile of sh*t the FX5200 is...

I've actually never heard that one yet, and I'm glad. It'd give me a headache this: |<--------------------------------------------------->| Big. Of course the obvious solution is to say then why is a pentium 4 at 2.4 ghz much faster than a celeron at 2.4 ghz, then they respond that it's not and all hope is lost :/

my *cough*brother*cough said the exact same thing, wouldn't get a 9800pro cause it only had 128megs of ram. So i said if thats the issue, got me, get the XT. "Nah i can't get that". BAH!!!

Probably one of my favorites and [my tech's] most regretful: we had a on-site customer complaining that her computer (windows xp) was bogged down really bad, and that she believed her 12 year old son had been installing games and such. About 30 minutes into the service call, my tech calls me,

Hey Steve. I think I need to get out of here. (why?) Well, she wanted me to show her how to look up the internet history, so I showed her. That's when she saw the dozens of cookies under her kids login for adult sites. I think she' s beating him right now.

I got a FX5200 with some spare cash cuz I figured it'd surely be a LITTLE better than my GeForce 3 Ti200 64 MB. Oh man, it spent 3 hours in my system and then was promptly sold to another "sucker" I know.

Thats when I lost faith in Nvidia and got my 9800.

you lost faith because you bought a bottom of the barrel card? LOL man you need help....thats like buying a yugo for $10 bucks because its a deal just to find out a week later is a piece of shit. You shoulda known very well what you bought from day one.

ive just seen far too many computers that people want me to fix that are just in the worst condition ever. people just DO NOT know how to use computers...
ive gone on countless machines where there will be 800+ objects found in ad-aware... and so many people still run 98 or me. so many unecessary and useless programs, they must click on every single pop-up.
about 2 months i fixed my friends brand new dell centrino laptop, shes had it for less than 6 months and it had almost 1000 objects in ad-aware, and it was using far more ram than the system has. just an insane amount of programs opened just on startup, and so many viruses, and like 5 different aim profile viruses, it was just so terrible... so i cleaned it up as best as i could without formatting or system restore, got rid of spyware and viruses, seemed to be in good shape. Well a few days ago she gave me her laptop again and it was even worse than before, i dont even see how its possible, so i just totally formatted it.
some people really shouldnt be alowed to use the internet.

It's true about the spyware/adware. Everybody at my workplace has an ungodly amount of adware on their comp (and garbage like comet cursor, those IE 'search bars', etc). Popups are flooding their screen constantly, the adware always "redirects" their browser to the adware's search engine, and for the most part they don't even consider this abnormal behaviour!.

I didn't even mention the amount of sh*t they have load on startup, typically their system tray area takes up more than 2/3 of the space of the entire task bar (not kidding). :(

Maybe, but that is not what I was talking about.

lol my brothers P200 (well my one he stole for uni) came back with 3 antivirus programs installed and a fan filled over with an inch of dust...it didn't even rotate (god knows how it kept the computure cool!)

Had multiple viruses and the virus programs were not updated (im sure having three of them doesn't compensate for not updating!) - they hogged up so much resources that you could see individual windows being drawn in stages :S

Over 1000 adware programs. I presume he used the internet only for porn...God I thought I had a lot when 140 came up (none porn btw)

Hmm.

MY friend got a FX5200 256MB, because he thought 256 = the best card on the market, and is a stellar card. Well, after hitting him in the head with a book (Hardcover), and stopped calling him names, and stopped laughing that he bought a 5200, and then finally stopped when he gave me a dirty look.

I just told him "Just get a new Video card, like a 9600XT and you'll be fine"

Next week: HEY! I got a new video card!
me: the 9600xt?
him: No! Even Better! a Geo (he said Geo) force MX 440!

I didnt speak. I just turned around, walked away, and I've talked to him once since then.

Oh, and My personal Adware High: 85

Dads: 260 (Lots o' pron)

Different Friend: 485

Me- Hey, so your buying a new video card? Get a Radeon 9800pro 128mb!

Them- Why should I pay that much when I can get a GeforceFX5200 with 256mb for cheaper? Its got double the ram on it!

Me- That doesnt mean its faster, it just means your paying more for a steaming pile of shit.

Them- Ya, and thats why my steaming pile of shit will be better than your 128mb Radeon.

Me- Um...

I just had this arguement with someone. Anyone else have any "stories" of something? =).

Go see some of the threads from Malficarus over at The Lab and The Jungle forums, the most recent posts of his are on The Jungle, suffice it to say this moron has the exact same idea that the the ammount of ram is better than buying a card with double the pixel pipes, he bought an FX 5700 256 meg $15 (can) less than a 5900 would have cost, mostly because of brand loyalty (Asus) and the 256 meg of ram and percieved higher clocks. It is exactly the same argument that managed to get him roughhly a 5-10% performance gain over his TI 4200 and this is a guy that claims to be a gamer.

He has been our forum moron on The Lab/Jungle, which was developed from the origional Toms Hardware forum on Delphi, for the last 5 years. Every time he suggests hardware to get ,we tell people just to do the opposite of what mal suggests and they'll be fine. Not to mention that he's a lying sack of eel shit to top it off but you get the point :D

As I've said before, sometimes I believe forcing a person to do a total format when they may not want to will teach them a lesson about computer usage. But then again, some people just don't care. It does remind me of the show "Home Improvement" where Tim's wife drives the car with the OIL light on for a few weeks until the engine seized...

Heres a story for ya.

About 2 years ago, my freind bought some crappy hp 1.5Ghz p4 system for $1800. Well, like it was mentioned before, the dolt spent all this money and never bothered to take care of it. When the fan in the PSU kept stopping he didnt bother to take it to a professional or even me after i told him to let me take a look at it. I gave up after about the 1000th time i asked him. He decided one day he'd try to fix his fan, with a screw driver... while the computer was on. Well, the inevitable happened.. he fried his PSU. (i now have his comp :D its my fileserver)

But as if not listening to me the first time wasnt good enough for him, he went to micro center, and got cheesed into buying a celeron 2.7Ghz 256mb pc2100 40 gig hard drive computer for around 600 bucks with out a monitor or printer. This was all after I told him to make sure MAKE SURE he didnt get a celeron processor. Now he complains that he wants his other computer back.

oh yeah, one more story. if you're from the DFW area you may have seen Discount Electronics Warehouse. and if you frequent this site you'll also know that discount warehouse is one of the most ridiculously over-priced places. (they still have voodoo5's and try and pimp that 100 dollars a piece for them)

anywho, i had a friend who went to it and said 'get me a good computer for 400 dollars' and friends, let me tell you the screaming computer he came home with.

800mhz CPU
voodoo3
52x cd-ROM.
5 gig harddrive.

i disowned him and deny ever knowing him.

I can't say I wouldn't have done the same thing...

On another note, it still boggles me why so many people get sucked into the FX 5200 hole, its as though they are blind, and so is their seeing eye dog

lmfao omg man thats a classic. No offense but your friend is a total dickhead

ahhh more dumb ramblings from me ...

but the very first sign that you are in for trouble is when your friends computer boots and you see

Windows ME

my advice....move to a different state (change of name optional based upon your friends ability to pay long distance phone charges)

Thats a dame shame,

an FX5200 is only worth maybe 50-60 bucks because of the architecture and its features. I see no problem with it as a budget card that will offer relatively decent performance, however it is pretty ignorant to think that the amount of ram determines the performance of a card, same thing with the clockspeed on a processor.

Strange, I use Ad-Aware, but I can't seem to get rid of the malware that changes my homepage to either aifind, or fastsearch, and the one that relentlessly places child porn links in my favorites. Oh, and yeah, my system tray is empty, with exception of the clock. I don't even start up with systray; I have a hardware one (on my keyboard).

use spy-bot it catches stuff that adware doesnt and for the most stubborn of spyware use hijackthis but i dont recommend it it if you dont know what your doing

Such great stories! I'm just glad that I haven't ever experienced such dimwitted idiots... I'd be a wreck from migranes!

Anyhow.... these stories are not about computers, but about consoles.

A friend of mine bought a PS2 shortly after they were released, for a whopper $500 CDN. It worked fine and dandy for the longest time. A few years later, certain discs had trouble loading, but others worked fine. He kept this to himself for a while, until those certain discs were not recognised anymore by the PS2. It actually gave the infamous error code of "Disc Read Error", or DRE.

He asked me for help. "What can I possibly do with this POS now that it's broken?", he asks. So, being somewhat of a tech, I realised that the optics were likely falling apart or simply becoming misaligned. I did various searches online, visited a few different local shops, and essentially was amazed at how idiotic my crappy little town is. "It's time to buy another one, and trade that one in!", they say. Damned idjits.

I eventually found out that because of these DRE's in earlier models of PS2's, there were threats of lawsuits against Sony for this problem. Instead of battling it out in court, where they would surely lose, they instead would repair the DRE problem, for free, with the only cost to the customer being one-way shipping. Warantee status was not a concern. They fixed them even if your period was expired.

I did all the research I could, and literally spelled out each and every step my friend would take to have his PS2 repaired for free. Every step, from the number to dial, what exactly to say and how to say it, what information he would need from his PS2, and what info he would need to write down.

He didn't bother with any of this, and instead bought a new PS2 and gave me his old one.

I instantly followed each step I told him about, paid $20 CDN shipping, and a week later had a perfectly working PS2 with a refreshed 90-day warantee! Woohoo!!! Free PS2!!!!

A year and a half later, I've noticed that the air intake grill on the front of his new PS2 is completely clogged with gunk, and the exhaust fan on the back making strained noises.. I've told him many times over a period of several weeks to vacuum it out, or else his PS2 would overheat and fry up. "Heat", I say, "is very bad for electronic components, especially modern ones."

Guess what he isn't doing?

I vacuumed it out once before after advising him about it repeatedly, but I will not do it again. I have enough problems of my own. I do not need to resolve his. He can deal with it once it burns itself out.

I would carefully examine his crappy P2 233Mhz computer, but why bother? I'd just end up slapping him, smacking him upside the head, and kicking him in the ass.

So I give up. Helping idiots with electronics is like attempting to hold back the water from a crumbling dam singlehandedly.

Sad I used to be like this :( . But since then I have learn a great deal :D and a lot of it is due to all the people here at [H]ardocp :D.

I had to clean out one of my mom's friends computer. Found a lot of adware spyware cleaned that up stop all the programs from loading up on startup and did a defrag and got $20 not bad :D .

Strange, but Windows Me works fine for me... It's just like 98se, only with a few newer features, but most of them will never ever work. The only thing I like about it is it stores the desktop, so whenever you force a shutdown, it doens't magicly forget you were using active desktop, and your icons aren't back to default. Also, it only takes up 8 meges of ram (98 takes up 12, I think?..) But w/e. It's been running for more than a year and no format, now, and still runs pretty fast, with a couple minor quirks. A format would probably fix those, but I'm way too lazy to go through that again. Besides, I have a new computer almost ready to go, so, doesn't matter.

You might want to run a utility called "HijackThis"......when you run the scan look for a string starting with ( Global Startup ) and look for the home page that your browser keeps reverting to. Highlight that string and hit the fix button on the bottom. Then you can reset your homepage and it will stay........Cheers

One more repair might be needed lol...........get CWShredder and run it.

I've got one of those friends that thinks the RAM on the videocards means everything. He would probably choose a GeforceFX5200 256Mb over a Radeon9600 128Mb. Seriously though, I think Nvidia have probably made more money selling GeforceFX5200 to stupid people than from their 5900's. My friend also yabs on about ATA 66/100 etc. which is damn annoying because I really don't give a toss what ATA speed his 5Gb hard drives are.

I wanna ask a question and thought this would be a good thread (don't wanna start another for such a small question)

#1 2000+, 512Mb 233 RAM, Geforce4 Ti4600 (320/700)

#2 2400+, 512Mb 400 RAM, Radeon9200SE

What would score a better frame rate in OpenGL & DirectX?
What would score a better mark in 3DMark03?

Cuz he thinks he's machine owns mine but really they are quite close.

and these people don't know how to maintain their computer... they just think that it maintains itself... I mean their 2.4 p4 starts to feel like a celeron and its just incrediable that they spend loads of money and don't maintain it...
Like about 75% of people that i know that have computers never updated their computer via windows update, etc...

wha wha wha??? what's all this nonsense about having to maintain a computer? isn't that what Pixie Dust is for? although, i get a better deal on Pixie Sticks, and it works just as good!! :D
