Bragging about “eliminating a whole bunch of U.S. jobs” and literally replacing them with two people in India might not be the best way to win people over.

"We were able to eliminate a whole bunch of actually U.S.-based jobs and kind of replace them with two folks out of India to serve a 1,200-person engineering organization," Marcello said.

Unless I am mistaken, Unisys isn’t the only cloud-computing vendor in the world. So, even if this guy is right and cloud computing is the future, he might be wise to remember that the future might not include companies that brag about having two dudes in India running the whole operation.

That's the kind of thing you sneak into the 10th page of a 10 page report. You don't go announcing that to people.

Yeah I'm like totally calling those guys up when I need engineers. Yeah right.

I wish we could stop companies from doing this legally or stop them from operating in our Country like this. Workers in the US are getting stomped on.

It is disgusting how publically he flaunts this. I'm on the verge of creating a gmail account just to email this story to as many unions/organizations as possible.

I'm all for globalization, but this is a huge thumb-your-nose at us.

They have some joint events with Microsoft concerning Windows 7, Server 2008. Someone who is attending needs to be at whatever main Q&A they have and call them out with this.

The irony of it all is they're presenting to people they will "kind of replace with 2 people in India."

Honestly I don't know what to say about this other then F YOU Unisys!

Seriously it's time to tax the SHIT out of companies that do this.

Yep, and I keep hearing about how there's this huge shortage of "qualified" tech workers in the US. Never mind that it's rarely been shown to be truly more economical to outsource work overseas. I get so tired of these kinds of companies disregarding local talent that could be trained and kept on as resources. I'm all for a global economy and agree with policies like importing "some" foreign workers to remain competitive, but I'm questioning myself more and more as to why I bothered getting an engineering degree. You go to college with the hopes of making a difference in the world and being able to support yourself, at least, then stuff like this happens.

Don't let them give you the "global economy" line either. The only reason they're cheaper is because its cheaper to live there. This sucker aught to get his job offshored in retaliation. I'm certain you can find a ruthless bean counter over seas that can run an abacus faster than he can count.

The problem is that I am not stupid, I understand that:

Paying someone $68 an hour to assemble cars in the U.S.

...can't beat...

Paying someone $68 a month to assemble cars in China

(automobiles used as a reference)

But, I really don't need / like some guy flaunting the fact that he can "eliminating a whole bunch of U.S. jobs.” and then expect me to use his company for anything...ever. :(

Unisys (two weeks from now): "We kinda outsourced all of Marcello for a guy in the US with an off switch on the line between brain and orifice."

Fixed and dead on...but it is the way of the world.

LOL .. If someone was actually able to follow up on this claim .. I'll bet it's a load of horseshit. Especially related to the amount of effort it takes to keep these two guys in india productive.

I wish we could stop companies from doing this legally or stop them from operating in our Country like this. Workers in the US are getting stomped on.

It's not just the US, we're getting slaughtered here in Canada as well. I'm missing about half my co-workers currently.

They're also targeting Europe, but it's slower going as they're somewhat protected by law and unions. I'm no big fan of unions, but I don't see multinational corporations looking out for anyone's best interests--besides their own. It wouldn't have to called a union, you could call it an association ala doctors, lawyers, etc... Same net result though.

Re: the line about a shortage of qualified people, generally that's total BS. The company I work for already has plan in place for what to do when the Indians get to expensive, as well as plans on what to do when the Chinese follow suit.

It's all about the cheapest, most disposable labor.

This article and subsequent thread reminds me of two things...

1) [H] forum thread on cloud hosting
2) Various discussions and news articles extrapolate the off-shoring spiral; as off-shoring changes from country to country in a downward spiral search of lower wages, when and where will the bottom be hit?

Sure they have done it and I am sure that it works. But how well it works is another story. Richard Marcello can BS anyone he wants to about this. But I want to here from someone at Unisys that works with the system to see how well support works in that environment. Do the 2 people in India ever sleep or get time off?

its shit like this that makes me wish the general apathy we display to more lost jobs would be given when these companies are filing for bankruptcy and closing their doors. fuck bailouts or being bought out. roll over and die and let the competition get their dibs on what's left of you that's salvageable, between equipment and workers. then let the smaller rivals move into your spot.

you know. the way it should be. the way we preach that it should be.

This is why DoD/ ITAR work is the best kind. You simply can't be outsourced.

What I want to know: How can you be running an efficient business if you easily displaced 1200 works with 2 guys in India. That says way more about corporate bureaucracy than it does about out sourcing.

Why couldn't we just outsource his job? He's obviously not good at it, and had to blame it on his workers.

I heard him say that live - and raised an eyebrow. I thought - this is not going to end well....

That's very interesting

Yeah almost every large corporation that outsources has plans lined up. When I got laid off from a large company most know for having roots in a garage and developing printers, they were already moving away from India (for SW and FW) as it was too expensive.

Manufacturing had already shifted from the US to Mexico to Singapore to Malaysia and was just getting started in China.

I like their honesty. Every company does it, it takes real integrity to go out and simply announce it :)

Bottom line, who actually PAYS for products? He can replace every worker in the world with two cockroaches, if nobody's buying because they don't have any money then its all moot.

Even with globalization there is no free lunch, no customers, no lunch.

Rather than badmouthing this guy for being too "crass", we should praise him for speaking the truth. What should be offending us is not that he came out and blatantly said his company is outsourcing all those jobs, but the fact that this sort of outsourcing is going on at all.

And we're not only outsourcing, we're also bringing in cheap labor to undercut/keep down wages here. Two sides of the same coin.

I wish people wouldn't be so enamoured with globalization, becuase IMO it's not doing us any favors in the long run.

I'd rather see globalization and people earning their own living and prosper than see continuous wars and crime and starvation in impoverished countries as shown in Africa and parts of Asia.

Yes, it's going to eat up a lot of our resources, but then we're using too much of it anyways.

This is another example that being "intelligent" a.k.a. getting a university diploma and a good job doesn't excludes you for an absolute lack of common sense. Gimme a person with common sense anytime over an over educated, arrogant, professional imbecile any day.

That dear Azhar is because you are not a Westener but yet you come here to the West to exploit its advantages and constantly bitch about its defects, and of course because you are completely convinced that the third world countries in the East won't ever raise by themselves unless they parasite the West. A very proper degraded motherly point of way where the West has to pay the rest of the world for its supposed sins that has come from the Christian culture.
Blaming the West entirely for the disgraces on the rest of the world is what has you like that on the first place. Even Obama said it to Kenyans in his visit." South Korea surpassed you in the last 15 years in Gross External production after their Civil war 50 years ago. Today you're still killing each other in tribal wars like you've done for at least, the last 4 centuries. The only difference is that you use modern weapons. That has to Stop. Stop blaming the West for your faults!!"
Where are you going to go to parasite once the West is drained and gone?

You know? I detest Oliver Stone. But the Character he directed in Wall Street couldn't be more right.
Gordon Gekko said it and I repeat it. Greed is what made this country so great. The actual Entrepreneurs like Henry Ford owned their companies and they cared about one thing. Making their companies prosperous and their country prosperous. Once a Corporation Business gets in place, guess what? No one cares about the country anymore. They become a parasite. The saddest part, no one owns the company. It becomes impersonal and thus, careless.

South Korea is not really a good comparison.

Totally different conditions.
Soviet/China monoblock that was feared just turned the UN war into a bloodbath.
Some of the largest concentration of armed forces in the world there.
Tons of US economic aid, combined with US help in setting up a dictatorship.

But the essense of the message is still correct.

South Korea did recover from barbarism
Quite a few 'heavily religious' states have not, yet.

haha so true.

SMB should be the core of the country economy.

But most major economic powers aren't that way.

Taiwan is SMB based, but not a major economic force.
Korea is large corporation (totally great comparison here.... the chaebol) based, with major economic power.

Then... the USA is not really that... sortof Socialist (for the big corps), but still enough for the little companies.
Same with Europe (from what I know, I may be wrong).
Same with China (...)
