Anyone using the Hitachi 5k3000 3TB 5400 RPM hard drives in a raid 5 or 6 array??

I would like to build a 8 disk array for video storage and would appreciate comments on reliability from people that use the drives.

The cost per GB vs the 2TB are very close to each other.

They are 5700 RPM (not 5400). I am using 30 of them in raid6 on my ARC-1880x and they are working *great* so far. No timeouts or any weird issues and already had the array rebuild/initialize/etc...

What is the product model number?

There seems to be two models of the 5k3000 currently marketed, HDS5C3030ALA630 for around $170.00 and H3IK30003254SW marketed as IDK (internal drive kit) version for around $130.00

Or a link to the place you purchased them would be ok.

They are the same models. SW at the end means that it comes with software to install 3TB drive (at least that what I've heard).

The exact model of disk I am using is:

Hitachi HDS5C3030ALA630

I got them for $109 each at Fry's Electronics:

http://www.frys.com/product/6554803?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

They were having a much better deal the other day. And it looks like fry's also states the wrong RPM =P

That deal comes up at a fairly resaonable rate. Next time I see that price, i'm probably going to buy at least 6 more.

Backblaze uses them in their storage pods.

"We are constantly looking at new hard drives, evaluating them for reliability and power consumption. The Hitachi 3TB drive (Hitachi Deskstar 5K3000 HDS5C3030ALA630) is our current favorite for both its low power demand and astounding reliability."

Looks like they are pretty good.

Damn..from the link.

All told, Sean replaces approximately 10 drives per week, indicating a 5 percent per year drive failure rate across the entire fleet, which includes infant mortality and also the higher failure rates of previous drives. (We are currently seeing failures in less than 1 percent of the Hitachi Deskstar 5K3000 HDS5C3030ALA630 drives that we’re installing in pod 2.0.)

and

4) heat doesn’t correlate with drive failure (at least in the ranges seen in storage pods).

which correlates to google's report as well.

I have 10 of the 5k3000 5400rpm drives for a month or two and they are so far performing very well in raidz2

I'm considering these... anyone compared the noise/vibration level of these to WD Green (which are supposed to be the quietest and lowest vibrations)

16 in R6 at work, 8 in R6 at home. Both on an Areca 1880i. Most purchased from Newegg in blocks of 5 (usually gets them shipped in the OEM 20-pack box) though some were Amazon retail purchases. (Have cold spares as result of buying in blocks of 5 and 10)

No weirdness, no drops, no failed drives.
