Yep, been going on awhile. They've got a lot of CPU specials, from the $150 i5-750 on upwards.

Microcenter takes a large loss to sell the CPU at this price. The idea is that they make up the difference when you buy a bunch of other stuff at the same time (like a whole system).

Because they love to overprice merchandise these days and people will still buy them :)
No, they just don't want to take a huge loss. Try finding any other online store that sells it for anywhere near that price.

Ya, I have bought everything else I needed online...........except a case and processor. I am going to buy those in person there b/c shipping on cases sucks my ass, and then the processor prices online sucks my ass too! LOL.

They actually do have a pretty good selection. At least the one in Orange, CA did when I went on Saturday to pick up my i7 860 for $229.

Columbus has a pretty good selection. If you check out their website you can pick a store at the very top of the page to view stock. That will help in deciding whether or not to make the drive. You can even buy it online and they'll hold it for you so no one else gets their grubby little mitts on it.

Yep, I just did that exact thing. I added things to my cart to go pick up tomorrow. I looked at my location for the processor and they have 20 in stock, so i'm not too worried about them selling out by next monday or i'd try and save one now. They had a lot of cases too! Just go to the upper right corner on the site and it will have the stores listed and scroll down to yours.

Same here - 'you got a board and memory? 'yes I do', 'does it have all the latest and greatest features? 'yes it does, rampage ii extreme by asus' 'that's a pretty good board, might want to pick up some good memory for it and give this bad boy (processor) room to stretch its legs' 'already have some dominator 6gb 'that's pretty good stuff, make sure you get a good cpu cooler, they are over here' 'got a thermalright true' 'whats a true?' LOL I said I'm in a hurry, thanks for your help though.

if they aren't selling anything else I bet they'd almost rather not put their sticker on there, since it is going out as a loss leader. Then don't forget the 'protection plan' at the register.

I am pretty sure these are loss leaders (ie they lose money on each one sold). They sell them cheap to get you in the store and buy other components for the new build. This would explain why the sale is always B&M. Same with Fry's CPU and motherboard combos.

Good point, cause when I was thinking of doing an i7 a while back, I was like, well, if I drive all the way there, what other motherboards would they have, that I can just get the whole thing and be done w/ it in one day rather than wait for shipping...

And I live in NJ so I'd get charged sales tax no matter what w/ Newegg.

Keep in mind they will price match to online vendors like newegg... so your not over paying for the motherboard... well assuming tax < shipping and time waiting :)

Fyi look for the orange i7 920 box if you want a D0

They match competitors prices sometimes, there is no guarantee.

I tried to get them to price match a store on my Samsung 2233rz for $300, but they wouldn't budge from their $400 price tag.

I still bought it from MicroCenter because I want to believe I can single handedly keep them in business. :)

Well, I bought most of my system there. I used some old parts, so only bought the CPU, mobo, memory, PSU, and optical drive recently. I got it all at Microcenter. Every part was either the same or cheaper other than the memory, and I didn't really compare the optical drive, but it was ~$20. The memory ended up being bad, so I ordered a replacement from Newegg because I didn't feel like driving back out to Microcenter (~45 min each way) right away. They took the bad memory back without a hassle.

After the service I got there, both with the purchase and return, I will be back anytime I am buying enough to justify the drive, or if I will be in the area for some other reason.

I don't remember where I read it, but I heard that $199 was the price that stores can get the i7 920 for when they buy 10,000 or more, so it may not be a huge loss, but it is definitely a loss. I'd like to know how they can afford both that and having the other hardware still be cheaper though. Maybe they take a loss on pro/enthusiast equipment in general because people are likely to ask us where they should buy their computers?

Orange? I've got a blue box with an orange corner. It's definitely a D0 though. S-spec: SLEBJ on the sticker. You are unlikely to find anything other than D0 these days, unless you buy from a place that still hasn't moved their old stock.

Same here - 'you got a board and memory? 'yes I do', 'does it have all the latest and greatest features? You can solve that with in-store pickup. Then it will be waiting for you when you get there, there's no sales pitch, and they even let me skip the checkout line. At the time, all I had ordered was the CPU and mobo, and not a word was said about anything else.

You people are lucky to have a Microcenter near you.... The closest one to me is over 4 hours away...

I ended up buying a new boxed i7 920 D0 off of Ebay for $243 shipped.

Quicker and cheaper than driving all the way to Atlanta to go to the Microcenter.

Next time I am in the Atlanta area I will definitely try to go there though.... whenever that happens.

Nice information. So the CO is a blue box the DO is a orange one? I'm supposed to be picking one up for someone from here thats in north cal I believe. I've got a microcenter about 30minutes away. So if anyone else is after any and don't have one near them just hit me up and we can arrange something. This price is good till NOV 1st and has been good for what the last two months I believe. You never know though after the 1st they may jack the price back up to recoup a little before Black Friday.

St. Louis MO is getting a Micro Center very soon! FINALLLLLY

I almost can't believe it's true. Not having a Microcenter around has saved me so much money in the past. I picked up my i7 at the Sharonville location in OH on the way to my cousin's wedding. My wallet is eyeing me warily..
