i7 3960x Vs Xeon 2658 V2

Hello,

I recently purchased a x79 board that came with a hex core 3960x.

I own a 2658 v2 10 core.

Which one is better for gaming? Can the xeon be overclocked?

I recently purchased a GTX 980TI, are these CPUs acceptable partners for that video card?

The e5-2658 v2 may be 10 cores and ivy bridge so slightly better IPC than the 3960x but the 3960x absolutely destroys it in clock speed. The 3960x will play games better by far from the higher single thread performance. There aren't any games that can really take advantage of the 10 cores. 980TI is a fine match for the 3960x for gaming. It won't have quite the performance of a modern chip but still very solid gaming.
