Ok so I have a machine up and running. Not too shabby... albeit video sucks...
Precision 5810
E5-1630 v4 xeon 3.7ghz (Broadwell-E/EP)
16gb ddr4
Dell Ultra-Speed Drive Quad NVMe M.2 PCIe x16 Card
****PM961 NVMe Samsung 512gb - O/S
****SM951 NVMe Samsung 512gb - uplay games
GeForce GTX 750 Ti

so a bud just gave me a cpu/mobo/memory setup...
Gigabyte Z170XP-SLI
i5-6600k
32gb (4x8) ddr4

I threw a 500gb ssd and used onboard video and on cinebench r15 and it did not out perform my dell.
Albeit, the video card wasn't moved over but the CPU itself on the benchmark didn't outscore it..
on passmark website comparison is
i5 - 8057
xeon - 10302

and in cinebench it was...
xeon - 768cb
i5 - 545cb

so I know I need a better video card but was trying to figure out which machine to focus on and can anyone tell me if I am looking at it wrong? is the Dell the better of the 2 of what I have?

side note - ive got Mellanox cards and the dell has it working and the gigabyte is saying card has issues and disabled... latest drivers too.. and yes in a pci-e 8x... as I want to setup a 10g InfiniBand (have the hw) network...

thoughts?

Xeon is 4c8t with a better base/boost clock. It will win at stock. If your goal is gaming, if you OC the 6600k to 4.5ghz+ it will outperform the xeon in most titles as long as the titles don't fully utilise all 8 threads of the xeon (perhaps resolution dependant as well) With no intention of an overclock, stick with the xeon.

Hmm i have a crappy cooler on the i5 and havent oc in a long time. Maybe ill give it a try.

Games are older..
Titanfall
Rainbow six siege
COD original

Resolution is whatever 32in 1440p is..sorry just waking

32" 2560x1440. Meaning realistically you're GPU bound more than CPU, but I think an OC'd 6600k (say 4.7ghz?) would definitely help vs the Xeon overall.
