I thought the AX1200's fan was supposed to spin down at idle?

Just got my AX1200 installed. This thing's quite a bit louder than my HX1000W.
They fan never spins down like Corsair says it's supposed to. Bad fan choice too IMO.

RMA? Already?

Not sure about the 1200, but my AX850 fan hardly ever runs. This might change when I get a new video card, but we'll see.

You probably have a defective fan controller in that power supply. RMA with Newegg or wherever you bought it from. It is grounds for a defective unit.

You may have a shorted fan controller or some in the computer setup using abnormal amout of current. Is the exhaust air quite warm or cool?

Exhaust air's cool. I submitted for a advance RMA from the Egg. I'll let you know how the new one behaves...

i'm not happy with my ax1200 either, it is loud...seems many complain of this. i've been thinking of just eating the cost and moving down to an hx1000.

I came from a perfectly working HX1000W - just got the upgrade bug.
Still have it - it's perfect. PM if you're interested.

Is your computer on your desk or on the floor? Mine is on the floor and all I hear now is just the airflow from the three fans that line the top of my 800D. I came from an HX-750, and my AX1200 seems to be just as quiet. The loudest part in my system just a few short days ago was actually a single 8800GT!

Damn, Corsair's stuff is usually quiet. I know my HX1000 is silent. Sad to hear the 1200 is not.

My AX1200 is neither loud (under stress), nor does it does it have any problem idling the fan, then again I've got two 480's so maybe im not the best judge of fan noise:)

My feeling is that you should be using high end performance graphic card(s) to gain good advantage from using a high current power supply and those graphic card fans are going to be noisy to start with.

Ok, finally got the new RMA in and it's definitely queiter at idle. Not silent like my HX1000W, but it's better than it was. I'm happy.

Does anyone's AX1200 fan have a sound profile like this?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdfDm3T2GW4

(comparison between fan noise of AX1200 and HX850)

Note that I've gone through 3 units and they all sound the same. The noise with the AX1200 is not there when I stop the fan.

I literally had to turn off all of my fans and put my ear right up to the PSU in order to hear it, but yes I do have a similar sound profile. However, there is no other way I can hear it during normal operation, as my case is on the floor, and my other fans drown out the sound.

Sorry to be a grave digger, but I got one that was loud as hell too. I figured it couldn't be that bad but it literally annoyed me to where I didn't want to use my computer. I took my entire system apart and put my Seasonic platinum 1000 in and it's dead quiet, so I know it was an issue with the Corsair and not elsewhere in my system. I've since sent the Corsair back.

Recorded videos for anyone that's interested.

ax1200 vid: Once the fans idle down in the first video all you can hear is the ax1200. Even with the case closed.

second vid with the seasonic, even with the case open you can't hear anything.

The AX1200 isn't a Seasonic design (as mentioned above) so it's not going to behave like one. According to the Corsair product page, the fan profile chart has it at 24 dBA for most of the time, but not sure how optimistic that is. The Seasonic based AX850 (the highest wattage Seasonic based unit they have) is of course way lower in that aspect, as it doesn't reach 24 dBA before well above 600W.
