Microsoft is nuts since Ballmer left

Lol... same stuff happens with practically all new Windows OS releases... Does anybody still remember how much people hated Windows XP when that came out and how people were moving back to Win 2000 because it was so much better? Before you know it people will be complaining about whatever is the next version of 10 because the previous version is just that much better (however that works in the future).

Yes, it's always silly stuff, too. I remember when Fred Langa ( a "PC pundit" in the print era) waxed prolific about Win95 and what a disaster it was going to be for Microsoft--and oh, "Where's my lovely Win3.1....!?"...![]()
There are even people bitching about the fact that the Win10 upgrade is "free"...Unreal.
Aren't there hundreds of millions of laptops or desktops with integrated or attached cameras?
So far, the only real annoyance is that they've done an even better job at hiding the control panel than they did in 8.

But a camera app?
Is this what we are supposed to be doing?

Yep, the Start Button, Start Menu and task bar in Windows 10 look just like they did in Windows 3.0.
For sure I get so many memories of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_2MWQivUk8 for sure!
That headline would have made so much more sense if the author was abandoning Windows 10 to go back to Windows 7. Who goes back to Windows 8.1?[/I]
Microsoft could have hired some Nintendo artists and launched a very pleasing to look at...

Really? Wow. I was pretty thrilled with 95. It wasn't perfect, and I still ran most games in DOS, but it was light years ahead of 3.1, IMNSHO.
2. The whole Microsoft can force you to update on their schedule with no input from you is crap. I only have my hot spot feature for net at home so I wait to do any updates until I take my machine to a location with a hard wired net line. That doesn't mean I don't go online whenever I want though. I don't want a bunch of updates suddenly downloading when I am online doing something slowing every thing down and using up my limited net. Not everyone has access to real net, 25% of americans who live in rural America don't even have an option at this point. (Sat internet is horrible, I don't count something that limits you to 250 megs a day at full speed)
My point is Microsoft is still on this kick of one OS that fits every one, and that's fine it's their choice. But some of their choices are not ones that fit me so I won't be using Windows 10 anytime soon, and as long as 8.1 still does what I need why would I bother?
....
I'm surprised a HardOCP editor is not aware of all the performance improvements in Win 8.1 - plus all the other modern stuff...
It really is worth it to take a few mins to get used to the start menu or try Start8 or classic shell (I ended up not liking either of those though - for as long as I can remember, shell tweaks/add-ons like those are always buggy or have unforeseen compatibility issues with too many things.

I still remember all the crying over XP when it required 1 gig (or was it 512mb) of RAM to run correctly. People called it the most bloated OS ever, with pages and pages of guides of how to disable every random service and program on it (which would end up breaking your PC or killing important functionality).
On Windows 10 - I'm also one of the "vertical task bar" guys, anyone care to elaborate on the issues snapping the task bar is having currently in that orientation?
Zarathustra[H];1041775217 said:Hmm. XP launched with minimum ram requirements of 64MB, recommended 128MB. (Yes, it was that long ago)
As I recall later aervice packs REALLY increased RAM use though.
Zarathustra[H];1041775045 said:Yeah, as I recall there was a lot of heartache about the system requirements of Windows 95, making a lot of otherwise OK computers obsolete overnight.
Someone even recorded a song about it to the tune of Start Me Up by Rolling Stones, which Microsoft had used in Win95 marketing
Personally I waited to get Windows 95, until we got our first Pentium, a 90Mhz beauty![]()
I completely agree with the guy. I use Skydrive (now onedrive) all the time, and I love that Win8.1 has it incorporated into its OS. I hate that there isno longer an app, and to see my onedrive files, I have to do a full sync, which on my tablet and such, I don't want to do! It destroys the purpose. Its stupid.
I also found that there is no SAFEMODE. You used to be able to hit F8 to get into safemode before Windows loaded if it was crashing.
I had an issue booting Win10 , and I started hitting F8, and it didn't work. I went and looked it up, and it was totally removed, and safemode is only accessible through Windows recovery shell, which only launches when you request it through a windows reboot.....also really stupid.

Yeah, you gotta be right on that. I remember the launch build of XP running really nice on my Celeron 1Ghz OC'd to 1.2 and 256MB RAM. But now I wouldn't want to run it without 2GB minimum.
Windows 95 was by far the worst for me. At launch, I don't think the hardware to run it well even existed yet. My 486 DX2 66 with 12MB EDO and a VESA local bus IDE controller ran it like crap. DX4 100s, Pentium 75-133 were out, but didn't run it great either. My buddy spent 5 or 6 grand on a Pentium 133, it ran like garbage.
It really wasn't until Pentium 166 / 200 in 1996 that Windows 95 started running nice.
The only real complaint I have about 10 so far is the loss ow Media Center. I have been trying Kodi and Emby and truely have not been happy with either yet. They both feel very lacking compared to window media center.
With Kodi I am having problems with it connecting and staying connected to my media server. With Emby, I hate that you have to have an internet connection active just to make it work properly.
I just want the basic ability of being able to record programs to my NAS and then watch them later. That or watch a movie with out having to go get the blu ray or dvd disk. Pretty sad when window media center has had that ability since 7, vista with media browser plugin.
