Finally decided it was time to upgrade my 7970 to a EVGA 970 SSC, the newer one that came out recently, for gaming at 2560x1440. These cards seem to be sweet overclockers, and I should see a massive improvement in my gaming. Haven't been this excited about a PC part in a while.

Lol. Glad you are happy with your 970. Thank god We can breath now. You were stinking up the place. JK

I'm sure this thread is going to end well. Anyway, congrats on your 970 purchase.

As much as I like owning NVIDIA cards, we need AMD to keep the market moving forward unless everyone wants to pay $1k for 980 level cards.

Welcome back to the smart side.

And, yes, we do need AMD's "competition" to help keep prices affordable.

About the only thing AMD has been good for in the GPU department is keeping computer rooms warm this winter, and keeping some form of competition in the GPU market helping to keep prices of cards in check.

That said I went from a 7970 to a 970, and I couldnt be happier

first off, you were never with us AMD rebels. You were that guy.
Famiy-Guy-GIF-family-guy-31865940-500-525.gif

secondly, we all knew you harbored illegitimate feelings for the nvidian filth,
thirdly, tis appropriate that all the traitorous nvidian should return to their glorious leader, Huang, who is the worst AMD turncoat in the history of 3dfx.

Hey now, it was -3°F outside last night where I live... my 290's help lower the gas bill! How can that be evil? :p Plus Mantle, and FreeSync, without the rape. (Cough G-$ync cough). The nVidian rapists are the evil ones.

did you hear they power cars now too?? cars -> destroy the rainforests -> nvidians power cars -> nvidians are evil.

You see? Not only do they rape their own customers, they also rape the rainforests! The audacity of these people.

Wow, its just a video card, it plays games and all. Playing favorites for companies 'for profit' is silly. This thread sounds like Chevy vs. Ford back in the 90s. Lol

Op moved to a 970, congrats. Its a great card and I have owned two of them. I will probably buy both Big Maxwell and Bermuda or Fiji just because I like both companies.

PS. 290s make great room heaters for the winter though. I am appreciative of that since its freezing in my basement.

You know, if AMD is incompetent and we let them fail because they deserve it perhaps a good company (with fabs in the US) like Intel will come along when they see the market space. Prices would go up until another competitor is established, but a big corporation can't ignore massive profit margins, so someone has to jump on it. Probably be better off in the long run. I just don't agree with supporting a company that doesn't deserve it. Now, if the value is there (like it is right now for GPUs ) then sure!

Awesome to see most of us have a good sense of humor, and know that i don't really think AMD is evil :p

That was incredible news to hear you escaped the fanATIcs

Their cultist lair is well known as a death trap, where you either perish quickly or become a bloodthirsty monster craving all things red!

:) Enjoy your new card!

ATi (calling them AMD is just wrong) is still very much competitive. Unfortunately, the talent in that company got saddled with an incompetent overlord like AMD. One of the biggest blunders in tech history was the sale of a great company like ATi to a crap company like AMD. Hopefully AMD fails and has to spin off ATi again as a separate entity and then ATi is backed by real money - it would be a shame to see it go the way of 3dfx.I used to be a pretty big ATi fan back in the day and when news broke of AMD acquiring them, I knew things would end up like this. AMD never had good leadership and they just got lucky early on with a few CPUs, everything after that was one disaster after another.

When AMD was AMD and ATi was ATi, everything was a lot better.

Then AMD acquired ATi and things got ever so slightly worse, but on the whole was still pretty good. And when AMD killed off the ATi name, things finally went to shit.

All in for 290s for mining. Served as house heating. It's amazing, with little maintenance, 290s could be brutalized for 24-7 mining, but they couldn't go 15 minutes without a blackscreen in gaming or watching youtube.

I did really enjoy my 290s in the winter, but they were completely stable. :)

In the summer, stable space heaters.... ugh.

Yes, and they haven't found a fix yet as far as I know. The only 'fix' is getting a 980. A Mod on the Nvidia forum at least acknowledged though.. so they know it's a problem.

Just returned my GTX 970 SSC's. Yes... the new ones. I had decent cards too, 70.8% and 76.4% ASIC values. It didn't stop them from microstuddering and they never fixed the coil whine they claimed was gone.

Bought a used Sapphire R9 290X Tri-X and it performs great. Can't wait to get another.

Summer is coming. ;)

Yeah fortunately I'll be rid of them by then lol. Whatever card comes out next. The 290x's are great in the winter but I want them out of my room by the time it's consistently warm outside again

Sorry to hear you returned the 970s. You should've got a 295x2.

I was going to, but I couldn't pass up a good deal on a 4K TV. I got a Vizio P series 50" for $750 and that gobbled up all of my extra cash at the time. I am waiting to hear back from Intel about a i7 3770K I sent in... if I get a replacement, I can return a few components and get a second R9 290X. They are a lot cheaper when you buy used... as in, I can buy 3 R9 290X with nice aftermarket coolers for the price of what a single R9 295X2 would cost.
