i am really beginning to hate windows 10, printer support sucks...

What the fuck is wrong with Microsoft when you are trying to add an old USB printer and the stupid OS puts it under other devices and will not let you use it as a printer?

Windows 10 Pro
HP PSC 950 All in one printer

nope, can't use it as a printer, just a freaking paperweight Works fine in 8 or lower windows.. this seems to be pretty commn in later builds of 10...
 
I, too, would love to blame all the world's problems on Microsoft. Alas and alack, I just can't get it done.

the device is there but it is NOT showing under printers but other devices.

Here's something useful for you. Stop blaming Microsoft and Windows for every piece of hardware that doesn't work for you. Blame the company that makes the hardware and releases drivers.

That's about as helpful to fixing your problem as your post was directed at the right source of the frustration.

I read it, as did the other two that liked my initial post and commented as well.

You said it was a Microsoft and Windows 10 problem. You said you are starting to hate Windows 10 and "What the fuck is wrong with Microsoft". Hate is directed towards MS, even when its not their issue.

My reading comprehension is fine.

maybe if you posted a useful post in regards to useful information to solve the issues you would get useful answers.
But instead you posted a generic whine which gets generic stop whining responses.

Just a useful advice for when you ask for help in the future, you might actually make the question about the help you are seeking. In nowhere did you ask for that or provide any useful information on what you have tried/system specs etc.
 
it seems like one should be able to plug printer in ad have MS properly identify it as a printer...but wait, that's too much to ask


EDIT: MS shows this as a printer when you go to the update driver and see what it has. just for fun I plugged in a HP LaserJet P1006 and it installed with no issues using the same USB Cable and it installed without incident.. and that printer is also 11 years old.

in the end, I just got me a Dell E525 with my rewards cash that I have with them.. so no more HP for me.

Have you followed the steps in Step 3 for "USB connection (Windows 10, 8)"? Did windows update return HP or Hewlett Packard in the Manufacturer pane? Hope this helps.
 
Why would you need a dedicated windows 10 driver for it? A graphics card I understand, but a printer?
Not only that, there are printers that no longer work once you update windows. Why would it be the driver fault?

Why would you understand it for one product but not another?

My Brother printer requires drivers to installed. Both in Windows and Linux. Want to know why? It's up to the manufacturer to provide the driver.

As Chuklr said, no driver, so why is this an MS problem if HP did not make a Windows 10 driver again?

Again blame HP then, Windows does updates to core files, old HP drive stops working because it is not meant work with windows new updated core dll's and such, so again, HP fault for not providing a new, supported, windows 10 driver.

This is HP wanting you to go out and buy a new printer.

Because I had no problem using windows 7 printer drivers under windows 10 until recently.

Considering windows 10 will be the "last OS" from Microsoft, I would expect driver support for older hardware to end over time. If an update breaks a driver here or there, I wouldn't expect windows to fix that, it's up to the hardware manufacturers.

I upgraded Vista to 7 to 10 and so far no hardware issues. My point is, all systems are different and the combinations impossible to please everyone. It's impossible for Microsoft to make all drivers happy with their new changes, so some will need to be fixed by the manufacturer.
 
To date I have an old usb wifi dongle, a soundblaster X-fi, and a pci wifi card all of them running with windows 7 drivers on some windows 10 PCs. Hopefully they won't be borked with aprils update.
 
you're really upset about a printer that was released 17 years ago not working in a 2 year old operating system?

It is up to HP to either provide specific drivers for your 17 year old printer or create printers that work with the built in support provided in Windows. It is not up to MS to ensure your 17 year old printer continues to work in windows
 
had this happen with a LJ1200. removed it from device manager, installed newest driver and selected USB option and connected it when it told me to. works fine since.
try the links void provided.
 
Guarantee this is a PEBKAC issue.

Very true, but I would bet a Windows 10 compatible Universal Driver should work with it.

You have always needed a driver for printers. Just because some comes with windows do not mean they are not there.

There is nothing new or special about it... its basic knowledge of installing windows

p.s.
you also need drivers for
network
audio
USB
etc

You might wanna check that windows install of your if you did it yourself.

Man, I have this Kodak Dy-Sub and it doesn't work in Windows Vista, 7, 8, or 10. MS can bite me. lol
