I am looking for a full HW raid card supported in linux. For a 32bit/33mhz slot as the budget is very low for a server config. Are all the 3ware's or other 64bit/66mhz backwards compatable??

None of the promise cards are full HW aparently. Looking at running 3-4 drives in raid5 or possibly raid0+1

Running Fedora Core 3 on the test box...may switch to debian if i feel comfortable enough, and there are benefits.

3ware's definately the way to go. I can't say anything about 33/32 backwards compatability - that's the kind of question I'd look for on their webzit or send off to tech-support.

Okay, first, the 64/66 cards should be backwards compatible. 3ware is good but expensive. LSI or adaptec may be more in your price range.

Second, if it's for an interface you have spare ports for, you may want to try software raid, especially if it's 0+1. If it's a dedicated box raid5 is an option.

Just my suggestion.

Its a dedicated file/imap server.
redundency over speed.

I just want less headaches, hardware still the way to go?
