Hummer Drivers Get More Tickets, Survey Finds

Ockie,

"Jeep Grand Cherokee (11mpg)" if you have the 6.1L HEMI SRT8, I have the 5.7L HEMI and I get about 12.5mpg city and about 14-15 or so on highway.

If you have the diesel engine you MPG is better.

Umm. So you argue that your 12.5 is significantly better than 11mpg? FYI, the H2 gets this fuel consumption, H3 gets a whole lot better in real world conditions like yours.

Secondly, H2 and H3 is slated for a Diesel engine too but with the current GM status I don't think we will see it this year, nor might we see Hummer survive this year.

Americans in general are too scared of diesel, which is unfortunately why we don't see much more of it.

That is fucking gorgeous.

I love Hummers.. Not a big fan of the H3 but H1s are superb and H2s look great, especially Kyle's "Rage Against the Machine" black theme. You pretty much know when something looks like an offroader it's going to get used as an offroader.

I've never seen a Hummer driver act like a douche. Where I live it's jacked up f-redneck trucks with extra loud exhaust. God I hate rednecks... Soccer moms are virgin angels compared to them...

Some people I know who complain about people who drive Hummers get in their car to drive down the street to their friend's house instead of walk or ride a bicycle. I suspect many of the complainers in this thread do the same thing. Talk about an ego problem.

A lot of the haters in here would probably still hate on Hummers even if they released an off-road car that gets 150mpg, because they are idiots that don't know better. I guess the point is... maybe some people should mind their own business than worry what somebody else drives and for what reasons. I know one thing this thread has taught me. Hummer-haters are idiots and don't do their research before spewing crap out of their mouths.

Personally, the H1 is the only hummer I would ever own. I looked at the H2's before I bought my Tahoe, but I just couldn't get past their ugly looks. The towing capacity of the H2 isn't as much as the Tahoe, so I didn't consider the H2 any more. Since I don't really have a place I can drive a full size truck for serious off-roading with, it is not for me.

Ockie, It all depends on how you drive. I have a lead foot + hemi= low MPG. I am sure if I drive like normal people it would be better. Also, the HEMI engine I have shuts 4 valves off when at a constant speed (highway). Oh and I said that the diesel grand cherokee gets better MPG.

My parents have a diesel Benz. One of the nice advantages was during the last hurricane, all the gas pumps were completely dry but there was still plenty of diesel to go around, lol. ;)

...I have no idea what type of buyer that is in the case of Hummer, but Scions it is almost certainly the young buyer. A lot of the cars on the low violation list are bought by old people (Buicks) or work trucks.
http://www.greatcarstv.com/reviews/2008-scion-xb.html
The Scion age profile shows that 42 percent of their sales are to the 36-55 group and 38 percent are bought by the 16-35 demographic. An average age of around 30 puts the marque well under Toyota’s average buyer of 46.
38% (16-35)
42% (36-55)
=20% (56+)?

Yes- they're younger than Toyota. But when 2/3 of their buyers are over 36, how young do you really consider them?

Props to the folks that have them and USE them, but there's nothing worse than some fool in a gigantic SUV that thinks they're driving a Honda.

This only reinforces my point. They still have 38% in the 16-35 category.
Buicks 16-35 category numbers are likely under 10% (and likely <1% of teens).

It's not like you need 100% of a bad demographic to skew the statistics. The same goes for Hummers, whatever trait (that is attracted to Hummers) that earns them tickets, need only be present in 10-20% of the drivers to give them the title for most violations. How many Hummer drivers do you think were cross shopping Buicks?

It's who attracts the most Teens/Twenty somethings (or older who still act that way) that will generally have the worse record.

It's like when I was checking rates on cars when I called my insurance broker. A Porsche Boxster was quite inexpensive to insure, a VW GTI was 3X ! as much. It says nothing about the cars. It says things about the driver (statistically speaking) that buys them.

I know of a General Motors Plant Manager that did drove a hummer(company vehicle). The Plant Manager got several tickets while driving the hummer. Now he does not drive the hummer anymore. :)

There are vehicles. Some people love them, some people hate them. I personally hate larger vehicles, simply from a functional standpoint.

functional standpoint? wtf is more functional then a multi-people carrier that can tow a skyscraper at the same time? :D

This is so unfortunate, because there are sports cars that get the same gas mileage and are even more expensive. So why don't people key those cars?

Those cars look good. As I said before, attractive people (and apparently cars) get breaks that the ugly ones do not. Hummers are FUGLY.

They're also large and block your view on the highway, which wouldn't matter, except that they always seem to drive slowly in the left lane.

*snip*

Also since others have mentioned that Corvettes are huge gas guzzlers as well, and should be hated.

*snip*

Those are my 2 cents.

Actually Later Model Vettes are very good on gas (I'd say from the late 80's and up). Driving normally I used to get 28-29 mpg on the highway in my '89 six speed. In my '97 w/auto trans I'd get about 27-28 mpg. This is at 70 mph (70 mph is the legal highway speed limit where I live). I've hit 30 mpg in my '88 doing 55 mph. Hell, even the new 500hp Vettes get 25+ on the highway.

Maybe we can turn this into a Vette bashing thread now - though I don't own one anymore, so it won't be as much fun for me.

My experience is that those drivers who complain of this are also the ones unsafely driving up my tailpipe. I only drive in the left lane when passing, but am usually driving in the right or middle (travel) lane 5 MPH over limit 4 car lengths behind the car in front of me... which of course is just an invitation for assholes to cut me off.

Of course there are jerkwads that drive Hummers like idiots, but the same goes for every other car on the road... especially here in New England. They aren't called Massholes for nothing.

Sorry, but I'm talking about sitting in the left lane as if it's their home. I find this problem is most prevalent in Texas, for reasons that I can't explain.
