Hulu Doubles Revenue

Hulu just announced that this year’s projected revenue will be double what it was in 2009. Let’s see, Hulu was free in 2009 and then began charging for its service in 2010. I guess this coming year will really be the one to watch, now won't it?

But its bullish financial projections could increase investor's appetite for a sale. Last year, Hulu posted revenue of $108 million, so this year's projected $240 million would represent a jump of nearly 125 percent.

Thats pretty good revenue for being an ad-supported service. I (and I'm sure many other [H]'ers) can't justify spending money on a premium account when there are so many other readily available means to watch TV. As a convenient, free service Hulu does its job well. The more they move away from the convenience or increase the cost of use, the less useful it will be.

Keep in mind this is a 'projection', not a 'we did it!'

Good for them, I hope they can keep it up, Hulu is a pretty good service. Maybe the good news will help them get more advertisers, and better advertisers. It seems like half of their ads are for charities, I can't see that being the best buisness model to maximize your ad revenue.

I just hope they can get more TV Shows or networks for an affordable price. If I can get all my local TV for free, and a few select Cable TV shows on Hulu for another $10 a month, that'd be a lot better than paying $50 a month for a box and service from a cable company.

Yup. I wouldn't mind a IP based TV service myself. What I've found so far is lacking... greatly.

Hulu seems to be heading in the right direction though.

Hulu is heading in the right direction for revenues in the sense that their ads are integrated but they're missing (as far as I know) the all-important targeting that Google will be able to do with their system.

For example, I always seem to get dog food commercials yet I am a not a pet owner and don't like dogs. These are wasted on me... but the ROI for the advertiser would be much better if these ads targeted dog-lovers (which could be determined with personal information Google already knows or maybe by analyzing search habits).

Hmmm... search habits... It'd sure be swell to get hit with porn ads while trying to watch the latest episode of Burn Notice, Psych, The Walking Dead, etc with the little lady. :D

Who cares how much they made. We don't care what widget or service they provide. We only care about when the investment dollars come in and when they go out. That's where the money is if you do not know.

Hulu started charging for its service!? But I still get so much stuff for free! Oh...you mean they added a pay service on top of the existing free content.

Good on Hulu! I guess that's what happens when you offer a product people want at a price people are willing to pay.
