HTC VIVE PRO in Pre-Order

The HTC VIVE PRO is pushing out in preorder today with the VIVE moving to a $499 price point. Worth noting is that the VIVE PRO is not the complete system, but simply an HMD replacement for the current VIVE system. The VIVE PRO does not ship with controllers or base stations, so it is very much an upgrade for current VIVE owners. InsideVR did get to test the VIVE PRO and interview Dan O'Brien at HTC and found everything it is touting about the VIVE PRO to be spot on. No word about the delivery date for its wireless adapter. We have been playing around with the TPCAST wireless solution here in our offices and wireless is surely the next big hurdle to be cleared with eyetracking and foveated rendering behind that to lower GPU resource needs following close behind.

HTC Vive™ today announced that the HTC Vive Pro™ Head Mounted Display (HMD) will be available for $799 with global pre-orders starting now. The company also announced a $100 price reduction for the current Vive full kit, bringing it down to $499 across the globe. All Vive Pro HMDs purchased by June 3rd, which will begin shipping on April 5th, will come with a free six-month trial to Viveport Subscription, where consumers can choose up to 5 titles per month from the more than 400 titles available.

Worth mentioning here is that the full VIVE system is down to $500.

I am looking forward to testing performance deltas between the VIVE and VIVE PRO. There has not been a lot of reason to spend resources testing VR lately due to the stagnant nature of the GPU world. But yeah, that is not cheap for an upgrade.

Don't worry a discount is coming soon, they're trying to see how much money gamers have, since gpu prices have gone up they'll figure out that they don't have much very quickly.

$500 was my ceiling but I was more thinking $400.

Oh well such is capitalism. Not the end of the world, I still have my Vive.

37% PPI increase is pretty significant. I can't stand 1st gen VR because of the blur and screen door effect. The entire thing has basically been redesigned to support future upgrades, like the 2 front facing cameras. It also looks much more comfortable than the first model. They basically fixed everything wrong with the first one. And with the current state of GPUs and computer hardware in general, it looks like I won't be upgrading anytime soon.

I would have paid $800 for the whole package for a VIVE Pro but it looks like we're looking at upwards of a $1000 for a VIVE Pro with base stations and controllers. Just not enough of an upgrade for me to justify dropping that much since I have my Rift all setup with 4 sensors already. Maybe if I didn't have VR already.

How much has the inflated GPU market affected VR adoption? The entry level for a decent VR rig seems to have gone up a few hundred dollars at least, which is usually enough of a barrier to prevent any type of momentum. Compare it to consoles where just $100 can make or break a consoles entire life cycle.

I've been on the fence on getting a VR headset for a while now. Couldn't decide whether to get this gen, or wait for next gen features - namely eye tracking and wireless. Then I realized, I will probably have to upgrade anyway, no matter what gen I get, so I might as well take the plunge now expecting to get a new set 1-2 years from now.

The issue now is locking into a system. It's like getting an SLR and buying lenses, once you've committed, it's really hard to switch from one brand to another because of incompatibility with the peripherals. So between Oculus and the Vive, I was really waiting to see what the price of the new headset was before making a decision. $1300 for an old Vive system and a HMD upgrade for an incremental upgrade on resolution, then having to upgrade the base stations down the road is just ridiculous.

Given that I've heard the 3 sensor Oculus setup gives about the same tracking performance, and that the controllers on the Rift appear better, I think the price makes the choice much easier for me now.

Now to wait to see if Oculus drops the price of the Rift in response to the old Vive price drop.

I haven't gotten to try it yet but the Pimax 8k I backed that as well as picking up the Vive Pro (sucker here). I honestly really want the pixel density along with a massive increase in FOV which is why I'm really looking forward to the Pimax so much (hopefully I'll get it in a couple months as well).

Go with the mk3. I convinced my boss to go with the mk2 then went with the cr10 myself. I love being able to remind him my print area is a lot bigger than his. his print quality is superb, however.

Yeah, sorry, HTC is ridiculous. It's a marginal upgrade by any standard, and even though the technology has matured for 2 years, they have the gall to price the headset alone what they were charging for the entire setup...2 years ago.

I'm not happy. I sold my vive to a friend several months ago to hold out for higher resolution. I can stomach the headset but after price checking the base stations and controller... It cost as much as a brand new vive setup.

Given that the Vive Pro is higher resolution, you might be looking at a 1080 or 1080 Ti to push 90 FPS on this new headset.

They're going to release a wireless module for it later this year if they keep to their schedule. No price or release date yet. Current Vive Pro still has wires.

I have the Vive and the Samsung Odyssey (surface book deal) I love the Samsung Odyssey displays.... (same as vive pro), and love the vive tracking... I wish I could have used the samsung headset with vive controllers... Alas... doesn't work that way. Thus I preordered the Vive Pro (I also am a sucker for high end toys) I've sold my tpcast and I'll probably sell my odyssey to recoup the cost.
