Question 0
Can this device support 9th generation core processors as it uses the Intel Q370 chipset which can support them
I have want to try an i9-9900 (Non K as I only have the 65W cooling solution) but I don't want to buy one only to have it not work!

Question 1 and the most annoying one
Why does this thing take so damn long to post from a power off?
I timed it and it takes about 35 Seconds before the hard drive light starts flashing and than the monitor turns on but why is this taking so damn long? After it turns on it still has to load Windows 11 Pro (I actually like Windows 11)
The device will just sit there 'thinking' for about 35 seconds but why?
This really irks me LoL!

Thanks

I have a 95w 8700k based g4 that takes much less than that to post, but it does use a newer nvme drive. I think some of these came with sata based drives that were of the m.2 variant. Still I don’t think that matters.

This is a ddr4 machine so it’s not memory training.

I have probably… 4 of these ranging from g4 to g9 and none of them take that long to boot.

And yes with the most current bios and firmware a 9900 should work. I successfully ran a 9900k in testing on mine after a bios update, since the 95w version supported it. I got an offer on the 9900k and realized I was fine with the 8700k.

Really for what these machines can do, I don’t think moving up to a 9900 would be worth it unless you are using a 8 series i3 or something. I’d spend the money elsewhere.

newer nvme drive

I have a Gen 4 WD BLACK 500GB SN850 (WDS500G1X0E-00AFY0) yes I know this is a gen 3 PC

Could the Gen 4 SSD causing the Long post?
The actual loading windows does not take that long it is just 'waking up' the monitor (The PC just waits there for about 35 Seconds doing nothing why I don't)

I have an i7-8700 what should I upgrade next than (Other than the whole PC LoL)

You don't have more than one os on the drive, right? Check your bios for a timeout for the startup menu display - that is the 'press' whatever key to enter bios message and delay - and make sure it's not set for 20 seconds or something. Also, check your boot order. HP tends to have every possible boot device active. Disable the ones you don't need, especially the network one and any optical drives you don't need. Make sure your drive is all, maybe keep a usb listed, just in case. Is there a compatibility mode or Legacy mode set in the bios? Stick to UEFI if possible. Check to see if the sure boot options are there. If so, see what they are doing, enable / disable as needed. Something like verifying boot block on each startup could delay things. Disable it unless you need it. Check the 3rd party option roms setting and see if it's pausing to allow you to load those. Disable if not needed. Check Fast boot. If enabled try verifying its set up correctly. Sometimes it gets goofed up.

If your drive is working properly it won't be the cause a of a slowdown. Something else is going on and it sounds like it's getting delayed in the bios - likely doing exactly what it's been set to do. May just need to change a few settings.

What are you doing that's limited by the 8700? May not see much more from a 9900. But, I say that only because of the small size and heat in my HP's. With enough cooling its definitely a better cpu. Just double check that your bios specifically supports the 9900. OEM's would need to update the bios for a new cpu.

I loaded factory defaults and disabled all of the HP BIOS protection items as well as the 3rd party option ROMs and disabled all the boot options except the NVMe and USB. The monitor now 'wakes-up' in 15 seconds (Vs. 35 Seconds) and Windows says the last BIOS time was 25.9 Seconds Vs the 52 Seconds like to used to say.

Video encoding, but that was only a bit faster on my Ryzen 9 5900X (Which I had to unfortunately sell as I moved into a rehab place and it was too large) but I am not a Handbrake expert by any means so I maybe screwing up settings.

Looks like you cut the boot time by half. That's good!

If you are using Intel Quick Sync it won't matter much. They have the same igpu. Handbrake supports Quick Sync. CPU only then the 9900 should help, if it's compatible and if you can keep he heat in check. Check your stock cooler. They do make one that's a bit beefier, 95w versus 65w, iirc. But, if not compatible you end up with a hole in your wallet for nothing.

Hard DC'er of the Year - 2003

We have a small but [H] Distributed Computing group that competes in challenges as a team. We're just a few threads down. It's an interesting way to push and play with the hardware out there - old and new. Some projects benefit science. Some are more academic focused. Plenty to choose from.

Intel Quick Sync

I don't use Intel Quick Sync as I'm all about file quality and small file sizes that is probably why it takes so damn long LoL!
Anyway like I said I am very far from an expert in video encoding so my settings are probably off.

keep the heat in check

This PC only came with a 65W stock cooling solution as the original CPU was an i5-8500.

That is the reason I did not spring for the i7-8700K I could not find the part numbers for the 95W cooling solution, I believe it has a rear fan and a bigger heat sink and a different fan duct as well.

I have items 11 and 12 (65W cooling solution)
The 95W Cooling solution needs item #s 4,5 & 8

I have an older one with a Ryzen 2400 Pro and it takes about 15-20 seconds to get to the windows screen, and that is with me having to press enter when it powers up telling me that the chassis fan isn't working.

Ryzen 2400 Pro
Wow I didn't know HP used Ryzen processors! I did however see the older ones that used the A-Series APUS but not the AMD Ryzen based ones!
I wonder if they made one that can support a 5900X (Not like I have one anymore :()
What is the model number of that PC?
