I have 2 HP DL380p Gen9 machines sitting on the recycle skid, but they have the 1400w / 220v PSU in them, can those be swapped with 120v PSU?
The reason they had the 1400w PSU was these were render machines and had Nvidia render cards in them, the cards arent there now and Id like to use them as ESX/HyperV machines at home (E5-2670v3 / 128gb specs)

I couldnt find much on swapping the PSU, Im just curious if there is anything inside I need to change as well.

Just an opinion. But you shouldn't have any issues. The internals of the chassis should be identical regardless of the PSU used.

Quick spec sheet lists the power supplies and models you can use with the chassis.

It looks like the the 500W and 800W versions will accept 100-240 VAC. This should be auto-switching internally and is usually done to manage power efficiencies. The 1400W looks to be 220V only probably due to the expected draw.

The Supermicro servers I work with accept 120 or 240 just by changing the power cable (check power supply specs before doing this!). We use the C13-C14 cable for 220V and I believe is rated 20A, where the C13-5-15P cable is used for 120V is only rated for ~15A. These will vary with different gauge wires of course but you are typically limited by the circuits at this point.

Ref:
1400W @ 120v = ~12A
1400W @ 240v= ~6A

This is off my g8* psu. It's a lower wattage but you can see where it's rated for 100-240V

edit * corrected typo stating it was a g9 psu. It is, in fact, a g8 psu.

Yes, you can swap them with 500w or 800w versions. Nothing else needs to be done.

Thanks for the info, I thought it should be plug n play, but since coming from the factory with the 1400w units, I wasnt sure if there was any different connection or board/regulator inside.

Update, checked thru the decomms pile at work, swapped a pair of 500w psu for the pair of 1400w psu, fired right up.
Fairly quiet for home use.

The gen 8's were quiet so I'm sure the gen 9's are just as quiet. We use to have a loud server room and we moved to gen 8's and it drop the noise level by half

I assume youre excluding the noises they make when starting up, I can hear a single HP server turn on over the entire rest of the DC lol

Them starting up is still less then a DC full of old supermirco's 5013's and 5015's which were P4's. lol
