Real time global stat tracking for the game. Currently there are 61 players online on 3 servers worldwide. The average is usually less than a hundred. Numbers pick up when the developers put the game on sale or release content, but it always comes back to this figure within days.
The game is as dead as can be.
If it wasn't for the empty servers I'd be playing it more. Shame it never caught on.
Looking around for why this title has failed, the main criticism I found was that there was only one gun in the original game, and people found that boring. The "Firepower" patch added more weapons, but that was apparently far too late for the game to recover.
I was gifted this game and honestly, it just plain out blew chunks. No desire to keep playing it after an hour or so.
It's free on Steam this weekend.
Here's hoping there aren't thousands of others saying the same thing!
If all the people who currently own it but don't play it started playing, it'd be a decently active game. It really does deserve more players. I really do love SH.
Whoops.
I bought a four-pack, that way if I ever get into SH, and want to boldly proclaim its greatness, if someone else really wanted to get in on it as well, I have copies ready to hand out.
But, I bought it over five months ago, and have never even installed it. Whoops, my bad...
It looked interesting, but since it's not DX9 and I don't plan on being able to buy new hardware and stuff anytime soon...no point in purchasing it and hoping it's still around.
Did I mention I bought a four-pack of 5870s? Just so that if I ever got into...
Just kidding, just kidding...
Steam survey says 53% are DX10 capable.A big reason why it didn't catch on is that it's DX10 only. If you look at the Steam hardware surveys, a lot of people are still on DX9 only.

I don't really buy that anyone even remotely interested in gaming isn't able to do DX10 these days. DX10 GeForce's launched in 2006, that's when I got mine. Later in 2007 the 8800GT and all of the rebadgings became the defecto cost/performance ratio buy for gaming.
Win7 was a mere $39 at launch...
I just can't see how anyone even remotely interested in gaming missed the boat that completely badly. We're almost halfway through 2010 now...
