How would I build a DVR?

I want to build something that let's me record TV shows and have the ability to make hard copies with the DVD burner. I don't want to have the TiVo contract but is there some kinda proggy that would give me a program schedule and be able to record when I tell it to ahead of time and that stuff...

Do I basically just need to build a normal windows box and get one of the hauppauge PVR's and a DVD Burner... or is there another way...

I'd like to do it fairly inexpensively and make it easy enough my dad could use it.
 
do some reading, start with the sticky in this thread.

Yes, just build a normal computer, but when looking for parts you may want to look for specific features. Just read some threads in this forum and do some research up in the sticky.

and there are front ends out there, some for windows, some for linux, some that cost money, some that are free, just read up on them and pick which is best for you.
